MKIII atx question...

hey alls...

I just picked up an 87 NA atx targa for $500... my plans as it stands are to replace the headgasket... arp headstuds... 7mgte full turbo conversion (all turbo parts/electronics on 7mge longblock)...

my question... the car is an atx car..... what is the difference between the turbo and non turbo auto trannies? will the non turbo tranny hold up to mild boost if in good shape? if not... will the turbo atx swap in easily?

also... how much power can the stock 7mge hold up to safely?

thanks

If by ATX you mean automatic trans? I do believe that both N/A and Turbo auto's had the same trans. The N/A manual is the W58 and the Turbo is the much stronger R154.

Now a quick question... why completely strip down the N/A block and put all Turbo equipment on it? There are a few small differences in the N/A and turbo blocks. Sounds like you know what you're doing though with the ARP studs and headgasket.

And one small part... Pics!

They W58 was the standard auto tranny for all Mk3 Supras. It's typically stated to only be good to 350-400hp.

With the lack of oil squirters to cool the pistons, a higher compression ratio and electronics that will need to be swapped anyway the question arises, "Why?"

Borrowing from Dr.Jonez, here are the differences:
Quote:
lower compression pistons (NA- 9.2:1 vs. turbo- 8.4:1)
piston oil squirters
oil cooler
driveshaft
differential ratio (NA- 4.30, may be LSD vs. turbo- 3.91 (<'88) or 3.73 ('89+) LSD)
10 blade cooling fan
different tachometer driver board (due to the coil packs)

here is the car as it sits... i think its worth the $500 i gave for it...

the motor doesnt have too many miles on it for what it is... and i can get the turbo manifold/ turbo/ and other odds and ends dirt cheap... so i figured why not...

i might just run the turbo on the na ecu... run a rrfpr and an msd boost retard ign. box w/ the factory ign setup... keep a close eye on things... if i do it that route... i could throw 7-10psi to it for pretty cheap (less then $400)... and if i plan on doing that... i might go with the thicker headgasket to bump compression down a bit...

anyways... just ideas i'm tossing around at the moment... i might consider the gte swap if the motor has some more serious issues besides the common hg problem.... if it knocks... smokes... etc... we'll see come saturday when i get to tinker w/ it...

It does look like it's pretty nice for only $500. I paid 900 for mine

i got it home today and got it to start on starting fluid... but the 8yr old gas in the tank did its number on the tank and pump... drained the tank... gonna drop the tank and clean it... and a new pump will be here this coming week...

on a good note... it started very quickly considering it had been sitting for so long... and oil pressure came up quick... all the fluids are topped off (rad. was about ... 2 cups low give or take) but for sitting that long... im suprised most everything wasnt empty.

anyways... i'll post up how everything goes next week.

thanks guys
