89 supra deal

So i'm new to this section of the forums i mostly stick around the 7th gen corolla section, anyways continuing on i found a local supra for 600 bucks its an 89 and thats about all i know the motor has a knock or so the guy says i am assuming its just a shitty lifter which is most likely. I would plan on swapping motors eventually if i buy it. Just wanted to see what you guys think about this.

Welcome.

Depending on condition and whether that is a knock or not, it could be a great deal, or you could be swapping the engine next week already...Either is quite possible. Start reading all the stickies and search the section for the common stuff as most of the regular issues are here in one post or another.

to start you off, the injectors are loud enough to sound like a lifter tick on almost all 3rd gen supras. Check the source of the sound with a stethoscope or a big screwdriver. If you find it's not injectors, then move onto whether it is very mild knock or a noisy lifter. Again, the stethoscope or a screwdriver is your friend!

Supras don't have lifters in the classical, hydraulic sense. I don't know if this diagram will mean much.

What Toyota calls Lifters, are commonly called Buckets and Shims. They're all spring (mechanical) driven. If the engine has knock, depending on the severity, it'll either need a rebuild or (due to the price of a rebuild) I'd suggest a replacement. And while it's out a replacement of the headgasket.
