anyone ever use a magnet on their oil filter?

found this on fleabay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Filter-Magnet-fo...d=p3286.c0.m14

8 bux plus shipping for a friggin ring magnet with a pretty sleeve over it. yea it probably works - but it's the simplest thing in the world...no reason to pay that much for it.

anyone use this? or have info on it? thanks.

I've used magnetic drain plugs. Good bit of chips and filings accumulates on them.

A piece of ferrous metal large enough to worry about but small enough to be caught up in the oil pump suction will get caught by the filter media without the magnet. Some of the bits that get washed down from wear to the oil plug magnets are useful to have picked up before the oil pump sucks them up and sends them up to the filter.

I suspect that metallic grit the size of the stuff I've seen on my drain plugs would be hard on oil pump gears. The filter would get it before it went to the bearings, as long as the bypass valve was closed.

I have heard they work really good. Shame on me for not having one. I might get one soon are they pricey?

i guess if anyone expects that big amount of grit and shavings something else is wrong. However if you want one for the peach of mind, get one of the magnetic drain plugs. They are cheaper

Just take an old speaker, beat off the magnet and attach it to the lowest part of your oil pan. And never move it.

We already dent oil pans frequently, so that'll probably only last about 15 minutes or however long it takes to get to the first speed bump!

If you did just slap a magnet on, and if it stayed put, you then want to pull that puppy off when you drain the oil to help wash out anything it does collect.
