Super AFC?

Anybody try one of these before? I was given one by a friend when he sold his car, and I was thinking about using it with my wideband until I install my maft pro. I just got 550 injectors, a walby fuel pump and a better regulator. I figure I can set up a nice powerband with it. Nay or yay?

Sure. It will help you learn a bit about tuning. As with anything, the wideband is your friend. Don't install the fuel parts unless you have a lexus AFM. Just install the safc, tune it safely with someone who can watch for your first few attempts, and you should be fine.

BTW, if you plan on going maft pro soon, forget the safc and just wait a bit. Why wire twice...the interim gains with just safc tuning on presumably your upper limit of 12psi are not going to be anything that has you reaching for the holy shit handles anyhow.

Thats kind of what I figured. I bought the maft pro this summer, but it seems kind of complicated. A friend of mine in the air force is really good with these things and I was going to wait for him to come back and help with it. I already installed the wideband and haven't done anything yet. I just left stock settings for now. The s afc looked cool but I suppose it makes sense to try and get used to the pro first.

The MAFT Pro is definitely not a lightweight piece of gear.

The S-AFC I/II/Neo's have all been used reliably for tuning on the Mk3's. As long as you've got a wideband O2 sensor they work great. Without one it's a good way to destroy your engine.

Few key things to keep in mind: You can only tune the Open Loop (> 70% throttle). So, in the settings there is a Hi/Lo map and there is a section that controls when it switches from one to the other. Set the switching point to be ~68% and then use the Hi map for tuning and there you go, good to go.

Just a reminder to everyone... you can install the MAFT Pro in an AFC configuration... the great thing about this: you're wiring is done, you can learn how to tune the afr on the same system you'll be using later on, data logging AND when you're ready to switch it's only a matter of removing the stock AFM and HAC senors and adding a couple resistors.

Yeah, I heard something like that about the maft pro. I have it already, I am just waiting to put it in and use it. I just don't want to tangle with it right now really. Thanks for the tip on tuning jeeves, I will use the wideband and maybe a pull or two to tune. The problem is, the guys at the shop say they don't really know what a/f my car should be at. Kind of scares me.

I wouldn't be using that shop then

Under WOT, we like to run around 11.7:1. Rich enough to be safe, lean enough to make good power. You'll find most tuners aim for this area of AFR's.
