Emissions Question

Hi Everyone, I am new to this form and the reason I signed up is because I am looking to purchase an MKIV in the near future.

I am currently looking at importing a 94 Supra TT from the states however I have a small dilemma. The car has been already converted to a single turbo setup with a complete 4" exhaust system (turbo back). The car does have an AEM programmable ECU. What I was wondering is, would the car be able to pass the Ontario emission test with the installation of a 4" aftermarket catalytic converter and a retune of the ECU? How hard would it be to retune the car in order to pass the emissions?

The seller has the following cat that he offered to include with the sale of the car.

Also if anyone car recommend any good Supra shops in the GTA (hopefully closer to Orangeville) I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for any help.

Emissions are based on visual and on the emissions released from the exhaust. As long as it passes the rolling road test, and is not missing obvious things like cats, charcoal canisters, EGR valves and the like it will often pass. Depending on who is doing it, they may or may now know what they are looking at. I've seen some fairly obvious fails that do alright, and some that should pass fail because some knob doesn't see something that is there. Given the owner has to have passed, you might talk to them about where they did the last e-test and go there.

PUR automotive is a fairly well known specialist shop that deal with Japanese performance cars (skylines, supras and such). Several staff and an owner are all supra owners and members of the Toronto Supra Club (owners group). They have a dyno on site and tune stand alone engine management systems.

disclaimer: I am a member of the TSC as well and know the owner and some employees of PUR personally. I always suggest you get recommendations for a shop from a normal customer rather than someone like me, but you wanted a name and that is one I know well.

Bob

Thanks for the info about the shop, but obviously haven't read my post completely since this car is going to be imported from the US. And where the car is currently located they don't have emission testing.

I need to know whether, when I put the 4" cat on will I be able to tune down the fuel and ignition maps to pass Ontario emission tests. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in the first post.

I missed the US part. I have no experience importing, but have heard everything from "nothing special" through to nightmare. You need to spend some time talking to the MTO. If you can test at a friendly local shop, it's probably no different than passing a tuned car here. If it requires a special review, it might not be so simple.
