Hey Supra Guys, i have a couple ?'s

i have a 1980 corolla that i want to do a 2jz swap into, my only problem is that i cannot find a transmission that is cheaper than the damn engine haha, i was wondering if the 5spd from an 86 NA supra will bolt onto the 2jz block?

i would figure the w58 5spd from a MKIII will be the same bolt pattern as MKIV, are there any differences between them? will the input shaft be the same?

please help, TIA

The patterns don't match. Personally, if you're not looking to boost the power much, I'd look for a W58 from the MKIV to start with and you can then use quote common parts and it shouldn't cost all that much. You could also look to the imported 1jz bellhousings for the R154 or W58 transmissions as well since the bolt pattern does match the 2JZ, and that opens up the option of the beefier R154 from the 7m powered cars. Though with these, you still then need the flywheels from the 1jz to put it together and work with the starter.

The 1j bellhousing route leaves you beholden to importers and shipping parts around when you need them as well as mixing and matching...at least with the 2JZ-GE W58 you can get parts from your local dealer. A tough call either way, but knowing the swap this should be par for the course by now...

The 5-speed W58 from the 86 will work, but you'll need the bellhousing from a JZA80 Supra, JZZ31 SC300 or JCE10 IS300 to bolt it to the engine, also a flywheel from a 5-speed 2JZ as well.

Using the W58 from the newer Supra would be good as well, but the shifter setup is entirely different, so you'd need to swap the tail housing and possibly some of the internals (ABS tone ring, if your car has ABS, this is also connected with the speedometer drive gear on the output shaft).

Really the easiest way would be to use a Supra transmission with the bellhousing from a 5-speed 2JZ.

If you want to use the R154 like bgrieger suggested, you can also do that, the bellhousing can be had relatively easily in the USA from places like Driftmotion or Elmhurst/Champion Toyota. You'll need a 1JZ bellhousing and flywheel, and everything else from a 7M-GTE.
