What trasmission will work with 7m-gte? And what will it cost?

Well, I found out the 1992 supra I might be buying has an auto transmission, and that simply will not do it for me, so before I buy the car I wanna know what transmissions I can swap in it, and how much it is gonna cost me (for the parts, I will be doing the swap). I know that I will be needing more then just a new transmission, like pedals and other stuff, but I have never swapped a japanese transmission before, and would like some insight. Thanks.

R154...should cost less than $600 with the swap parts included. You also need the driveshaft, clutch, flywheel, master cylinder, pedals and hydraulic lines. There are bits likely missed, the parts are common and fairly cheap, depending on whether you want performance or stock, new used or rebuilt.

Thanks, I have only been able to find these transmissions with either:

a. WAY too many miles
b. $1,000 +

So do I need the new bell housing or will the automatic one fit?

I'm not certain about these, but typically speaking the bellhousings between auto/manual transmissions for a specific engine to not interchange.

How many miles is way too many? Coming from a stock Supra, I'd imagine a 300k+ transmission would be just fine.

A rebuild on a manual isn't too bad, so long as you have a press...

The R154 is pretty stout. The syncros get a little crunhcy over time. Keep looking, but find them from a supra owner, not a JDM importer. I normally hate recommending other forums, but supramania.com has a big for sale section and always has these come up for reasonable prices.

As an alternative I don't recommend, you could install a W58 from the naturally aspirated supra and those you should practically have to be paid to take! They will do fine at stock levels, but aren't known for taking high horsepower.

I heard about someone retrofitting a 6-speed into these cars, is it possible with a 7mgte? or was it probably just on a 2jz swap?

it has been done, but the shifter is much further back in the car, the gearing isn't great as I remember (though it's been a long time since I read up on it) and for the price you could buy a half dozen R154's and pay someone to install them...that's usually the stopper!

Well the shifter issue could be fixed by a well-built forward extension, but I can only imagine the price to put a six speed in there..
