New to Supras, need basic info!!!

Hi All,

Quick question and please don't flame me for these as you can see by my SN that I am not as wise in the field of Toyota's as I am in Honda's.
Could someone please list a brief description of the engine codes, body chassis codes and current terms for the different Supras? This is VERY importnat to me!!!

The reason I'm asking is because I've got an opportunity to purchase an '89 Toyota Supra Turbo which is all stock and in pretty good shape. I can't seem to find any good Supra forums or more importantly any that are dedicated to the third generation Supras. I'm already a member of this forum but mostly post in the Integra section.

I'm curious if this car is going to be something I'm really going to enjoy or more of a headache so if anyone has some reliable information pease list it here. Again, if someone could post the different engine codes and what year / model they came in, the chassis code and which years those fall under, and any / all current terminology regarding the Supra that would be dope!! Thanks all... keep on rockin'!

For starters:

Chassis MA65 - 84- Early 86 Supra (MKII)

Last gen that the Supra shared same chassis with the Celica before Celica went FWD.

MKII Supras come with 5M-GE engine.

Chassis MA70 - 86.5-92 Supra (MKIII)

Normal aspirated uses 7M-GE engine.
Turbo version uses 7M-GTE engine.

Versions in Japan also used 1G-GTE engine (GA70), and 1JZ-GTE (JZA70). The JZA70 is a 2.5L Twin Turbo.

Automatic trannys are the same for either MA70 MKIII version, but manual trannys are different.

Chassis JZA80 - 93-98 Supra (MKIV)

2JZ-GE - normal aspirated
2JZ-GTE - turbo & twin turbo (came out in 95, but don't quote me on that, not 100% sure)

The 89 turbo is a good find.

The only known problem with the 7M-GTE is the head gasket.

Replace with metal gasket, and you're good to go...

Good luck...

Hey, thats all good info...i only have one correction. the mk4 came out in the states in 1993.5, and canada in 1994. 1996 was the last year you could order one in canada, while 1998 in the states.

the 1994 in canada was 64,000 cdn bones. i remember the sticker shock when i went to my local toyota dealer to check out their new bad boy!

Thanks for the clarification, Ben...

Oh, more more thing regarding the MkIII Supra, in which I stated that the manual trannys between the two are different.

Non turbo MkIII uses W58 Tranny
Turbo MkIII uses R154 Tranny (much stronger)

The V160 6-speed found in the turbo MkIV is practically bulletproof.....and also very high in demand.

If you find one, expect to pay.....($$$).

Don't forget the ARP head bolts and ~72lbs of torque on them
