Hey supras!
I currently have an '87 Supra N/A 7m-ge.
I was gonna swap with a 2Jz-gte Twin Turbo motor.
Any advice on upgrades?
Please let me know!
Thanks(:
Lets start with the basics: have you performed engine swaps before, and have you dealt with customizing electronic fuel injection systems before? Do you have a shop to work in or will someone else be performing the work? and finally, what is your budget?
A master mechanic will have the skills for certain, but the budget is going to be tight if he is giving you a big break on the labour. Which transmission are you thinking of using?
The transmission is a choice unless you want an automatic. The 6 spd is a fine unit, though it requires a little more work and money to fit. The R154 from the earlier supra turbos is also a good choice, and a bellhousing from a 1jz japanese supra will mate the engine to it just fine. I suggest this as it tends to be the cheaper option most of the time. That said, R154's usually need to be opened to replace the syncros due to age at this point too. If your mechanic can handle that and keep the labour down, it's a good option.
Are you looking to run this engine with the 2jz ECU, or an aftermarket one? You're in for a fair bit of research yet unless your mechanic has done this exact swap before. We're only scratching the surface!
While I'd love to have all the info here, there are a number of considerations, and this is about the most definitive guides and information to installing a 2j into a MKIII chassis. Have a read through. I've skimmed most of it before, and am familiar with most data in there, but I'm not the expert on getting it going, outside of experience with other swaps. I chose to stay with the 7M myself.
It's hard to say. I prefer the 7M as it is an easier and less troublesome swap, but you have to rebuild it if you want reliability (...did you get a chance to read that thread to see some of the issues and parts list for the 2j?...). I don't ever recommend just installing any used engine, so even the 2j should be opened up and checked out. There's a chance whatever you purchase used will need a rebuild, but the 7M is basically a must do.
Now, in general, the 2J has less chance of needing work initially if it is from a reliable source, but should be cracked open and checked out at least.
A final option, if you had a known good engine, you could consider the "1/2 NA/T swap" where you are more or less slapping a turbo on the normally aspirated engine. It saves the purchase price of the GTE block and head, or you could rebuild yours and use that as the basis. If that was the case, you could install GTE pistons and such...though unless you are really looking to up the power this should serve well and is quite a bit of a savings.
