sorry but i am new to this forum stuff, but i am about to under go a 7mge to a 7mgte swap here within the next 2 weeks on a 87 supra. i bought a motor, transmission, turbo, tons of pipe, an intercooler, ecu, basically a whole conversion. i didnt know if the same driveshaft would work of if i needed any other parts needed to get swapped out.
Welcome. The drive shafts for the R154 and W58 are indeed different. The turbo exhaust is lager too (unless you go aftermarket, then it won't matter). The clutch slaves are also different, as are the flywheel and clutches. The differentials are typically open for the GE, and limited slip for the turbo cars. Ratios are different too. That said, either will get you rolling.
Here is a link to a conversion info page with all the differences, though you have most covered here already:
well after thinking for a bit i am now either go 1 of 2 routes then, because that is more money than i am looking to spend. eaither i buy a turbo supra and rebuild it, or i sell this motor and stay ge and boost it. i found a different head, over sized pistons, and other random extras. i think that would be cheaper
Yes, there are a number of electronic and other bits that need changing as well. The best bet for a swap is to have a complete turbo car from a wreck, or that has some serious body rot so you can simply swap the entire engine bay (more or less). You should be able to find one for under $500. If you already have the engine as you said, you can look for turbo cars with blown engines too and take your pick of the parts and you might get away for $200 or less.
You can turbo the NA engine, but it comes with it's own unique issues that need to be addressed as well.
well i do have the lsd rear diff. but i think im going with the Gude head package i found 1 for $1500 and oversized pistons and thicker head gasket on my ge. im just worried that swapping too many parts that i might mess too much up
Ok big progress here. I now have the probe get pistons with 1 beam rods in. Turbo kit is on it's way and I have sold bits and pieces off of my gte. I am now wondering if I will need a map sensor. My compression is 6:1 and I plan on running 35-40 psi and will be running a piggy back ecu to help support it. I said forget the Gude package and went with some Brian Crower stage 3's with upgraded Crower springs. Head and motor is going to be bullet proof. LSD is now a weldy. I was planning on running my mass airflow sensor until I broke it in and bolted up that turbo. I just need to find a map that will take the place of my mass airflow sensor. I dint know where to start looking. Keep in mind that this is a na to turbo forward swap.
What turbo are you installing? Anything that will flow 25-40PSI on a 7M isn't going to happen with a piggyback and hacked sensors. You would need to get into standalone engine management and a lot of other supporting mods including fuel that you haven't mentioned in your earlier posts.
Sorry I need to clarify. I have upgraded the following fuel injectors, fuel pump, installed a air fuel controller boost controller, running an aem ecu, I have 3 turbos I could use, engine is .040 over with gte pistons and 3mm head gasket. I was calling the air fuel controller my piggy back. I didn't know if I should get a map sensor or stick with my mass airflow sensor is all. My plan is to run 35-40 psi. I know the engine will take it I just think anything about a map sensor. Most of this turbo kit is kind of pieced together. If I swap over to a map where should I go to find one that will work.
It's a standalone. Should easily be changed out if you don't mind wiring. The KV also won't be able to deal with the airflow you seem to want to push. You'll be looking for a 3 bar sensor, though I have a suspicion you won't get to that kind of turbo pressure...only a rare couple of purpose built drag supras I've seen over the last 12 or so years ever have.
