7MGE Crankshaft Pulley

At exactly 3k rpm, either sitting or moving, my engine produces a a sound that resembles a chip bag being crumpled up, with a slight pause, and makes a steady rhythm. The first time I heard the noise I put the car in neutral and looked under the hood while it was running. I saw the crankshaft pulley moving back and forward about a 1/4 of an inch. I shut the car off and torqued it to 159ft/lb which is the factory recommendation. However a couple months went by and the noise has started up again, and I can feel a hard vibration in the shifter. I can't find a new pulley locally, and I can't spend $300+ on an ATI or Titan one. I hate buying parts off ebay unless I have no choice, and I know that used ones are well, used. Can anyone point me in the direction of a moderately priced crankshaft pulley, or does anyone have one in decent shape for sale?

have you taken it off yet? that kind of movement suggests the key way may have been damaged, in which case you may have a bigger problem.

I haven't pulled it all the way off yet, I was afraid to because I have this scenario in my head where I find the crank is bent at a 90 degree angle when I take it off. What kind of problems could I be facing?

This block is about to get a major overhaul, it has 350k miles on it. I just bought another Supra in better shape, so I'm going to rip this block apart and rebuild it. I have to replace the head gasket on the other one first before I tear into my first one.

the crank won't be bent That said, if the pulley damaged the keyway or snout it might as well have bent it. If you have another motor going in, you should probably check this one out and see how bad it is. If the plan is to replace, then you lose nothing. If there is little problem and you only need a pulley and key, this could be a pretty easy fix and buy you some time before you need to replace it.

one other point: Toyota factory pulleys are almost as much as an ATI...if you bought an ATI now, you could move it to the new motor later...if that is the problem! That said, they are a beautiful part and I wouldn't consider the Toyota one given the almost equal price...you can almost make it out in my avatar pic when I put the motor in last year
