3rd Generation Fuel Pulsation Dampener 7M-GTE

I just finished the head gasket on my 89 Supra Turbo. After tweaking and working out the bugs its running pretty darn good! Only 121K so its still young.

I have a leak at the fuel pulsation dampener though. After calling Toyota and getting a price of $215 CAD, I did some research online. Apparently this has happened to others and is common.

I found a couple older forums on other sites and read where guys have bypassed this fuel pulsation dampener on their 7M-GTE. It seems to them there are really no performance differences and can be done with a just little bit of ingenuity.

I'm wondering if others in TN have done this? Curious?

Thx

Congrats on the new gasket!

For those upgrading fuel components it's one of the first things done. Driftmotion sells a bypass kit with all you will need for fittings and hose.

Did you replace the aluminium crush washers on the banjo with new ones when you reinstalled it? They are one time use and will usually leak if you reused them. I had even a new one leak a bit last time I did it at factory torque, but a little tighter with a crow foot wrench (needed to to access it when you have everything reinstalled back there) cured that.

Thanks bgrieger, I appreciate the reply. That makes me feel better knowing its not really a necessary component.

I have at this point JB welded the top of the dampener. Thats where it leaking. While doing that I noticed the water pump has gone. (leaking through the holes) The car was sitting for almost a year. So I'm waiting for that and I'll see if my cheap fix works first. If not, I know where I'll be shopping.

I'm happy to find a site like Driftmotion. Thank you for the directing me there. Its getting hard for me to find MK3 parts at wreckers around where I live.

that might hold...but I doubt it. The damper does serve a purpose, but most people don't notice it (helps to stabilize fuel pressure in the rail spikes caused when injectors open and close) but again, I'm not sure anyone really notices it.

Aaron at Driftmotion has been a great friend to the supra community for a long time. There are very few places I will buy online from and he is number one in my books...although I really haven't spent much with them to date as I have a local dealer that is a big supra community supporter and owner too...and he delivers to my house with coffee!

The water pump isn't too bad for price...but it is a pain to swap. Check the fan clutch and fan blades while you are in there...the fans get brittle as they age (20 plus years now) and the clutches tend to leak out over the course of many years till they stay locked up all the time.
