The 7MGTE is just a single turbo and the JZ-GTE is a twin turbo engine made by toyota for the supra.

Mostly stock, with a new turbo, K&N FIPK and exhaust. The old owner gave me a free racing steering wheel.

7M-GTE: 3.0L, long stroke/smaller bore.

1JZ-GTE: 2.5L, twin-turbo (single turbo + VVT-i in newer models) with small cylinder bores and short strokes for fast revving.

The JZ family of motors was intended to take over 27 years worth of M motors. The 7M had head-gasket eating tendencies, and the 1JZ isn't available in North America. The M is the old predacessor.

Both engines are not made for the Supra exactly, as they come in several other cars. You've got 1JZ-GTE Mark II/Chaser/Cresta's, 1JZ powered Soarers (SC300), etc etc.
