what is the favorite wheel size?

My 88 turbo just went to the garage for new paint.
I'm going to give it a prize of new wheels and tires when it gets back.
What wheel and tire size should I go with?
Original suspension.

'03 Cobra rims look good on many Supras...

17x9.5 in the rear... then go find a set for up front, something liek 17x8. However, it depends. Are you going to be making power? or is it stock? You don't need to be payign out the ass for 275/55/17s if you don't need 'em.

Some 18s work alright on our cars, but you have to go with low profile tires often.

I prefer 17"s. Nice and wide in the back. I'm running 8.5's in the from and 9.5's in the back. Polished lips have totally come back, I'm not a huge fan of thin spokes but each to their own right. Whatever looks good to you is all that matters.

i saw a supra on the net somewhere the other day with some Corvette C5 thick 5-spoke Chromes, kinda like the cobra rims, it looked pretty nice

Most of those fat 5 spokes look awesome on Mk3's.

I am nearly stock.
I shimmed the waste gate for more boost.
When the exhaust wears out I will replace it with high flow and intake.
When the clutch wears I'll replace the flywheel and clutch.

My main concern now, is when I'm driving to work at about 80-90, around the corners I feel the side walls giving.
It un-nerves me sometimes.
I could just drive slower or replace my Supra with a Tercel.
But I am not going to do that.

So I was thinking bigger wheels and smaller side walls.

Why rubber do you have on your wheels? Sidewalls should NOT be an issue. Are you sure you don't just have the massive ammount of chassis flex all MA70's suffer? Personally I'd say get a Rear Strut tower bar, and then a front, and you probably won't feel that again.

The MX83 (89-92; 7M powered) Cressida is one SOLID car. A front strut tower bar does 99% of nothing... People who have installed strut bars on the MX83s have then been convinced that these bars are a scam...

... but I know they're not, because they do WONDERS on my dad's 1991 Pontiac Bonneville SSE... 1992+ bars from the newer body style bolt up.

It's mainly the targas as they feel as though the rear end is turn left, and the front is turning right, however it's not exclusive to them. Riding in my buddy's silver 87T hardtop it isn't nearly as bad, but it's still noticeable. As I've never ridden in a cressida, I can't compare.

I had H rated Coopers.
When I replaced them with a cheap V rated I felt a noticable difference.
So.. I replaced them immediately with BFG V rated, I think- I can't go look the car it's in the paint booth.
Still had the same problem.

Seems real strange to me, better speed rating but a noticable difference.
So... I thought I'd just put on tires with less side walls.

What size tires are you running?

H Rated tires are only rated to 130mph. V are rated up to 149mph whilst Z are rated to over 149mph.

Personally, I always ran 245/45/Z-16s on the Supra. For those not up date on how tires are spec'd, here's a brief rundown:

245 - is the tire width in millimeters. (9.64 in)
45 - is the sidewall ratio, always expressed in a percentage of the width. (4.34 in)
Z - Speed Rating (149+mph)
16 - Size of wheel the tire is meant to mount on.

A simple calculator can be found HERE.

Enter the tire information, and it will detail the size and information about the tire. If you enter a second tire size, it will compare the two.

The tires are stock size.
225/50/16 on stock wheels.

And I don't have a targa top.(Wish I did though)

I understand the speed ratings and I know I went to a better rating. That's why it is so puzzling that performance went down.

Could just be the make of the tire. Just because I run 245/45s, not all 245/45s are like the falkens. My sidewalls are incredibly stiff in fact... hmm.
