i just bought an 87 supra turbo and want to put subs in the back, but it looks like theres not much rooms with the targa top. Any inexpensive recomendations? I dont want to just lay a box on the ground under the targa top cuz i need to put things on the floor so i was thinkin like a truck box behind the rear seats. I found a nice box one place but it wont fit becaue it is too long
Hey, I,ve only got on 8" sub and there is more than enough bass. These small hatchbacks sound much better than larger cars. So I think one will be plenty for you, just pick a nice amp for it.
I only run 140w to that little one, and it sounds fine. Though my speakers rely on the HU, so we're not talking about a high powered system. Basically, if it can rattle a license plate, it's too frigging loud for me. Clarity is what I pay for, and I've almost achieved. Still loud enough I can't hear other traffic or my exhaust when I want. You can get more powerful 8's that will deliver more punch, but I have no need for them.
That said, it plays audibly down to 35Hz. 8", no matter the make or model will start to have trouble under 40 for the most part, mine starts to fall off from 40 to 35 where you can't hear it anymore below that point. 10 inch will fill to a little under 30 Hz, perhaps down to 25, and 12 or larger will carry you to subsonic should you want it. Of course, each takes up more space than mine, and is why I opted for the 8. Low enough for most of the music I listen to.
Other odds and ends about 8 inchers in sealed enclosures: Rap sounds a little odd as the little drivers are tight, so the loose flappiness of rap bass gets lost and a bit distorted, but for the chillout and electronica I listen to that has a lot of tight bass tones, it sounds great! Beautiful for kick drum and low down bass guitar in rock tunes as well...
Hey bgrieger I really like that setup you have for the sub in your supra. Thats awesome. I really need to do something like that for mine. Its tough to fit anything back there if you the targa to still fit.
Clarity is what I pay for too, I love good, crisp, clean music. Thats why I have installed infinity kappas in my supra with a 656 watt infinity amp to power them. The infinity amps are just good, solid, clean power with no distortion or very close to none. I have a powered bazooka 8" sub right now. It sounds great, nice tight bass, but it takes up to much space. I would really like to do something like yours with an infinity sub too. Any info would be apprieciated.
I'm not a big infinity fan for subs, and in my HU power range, the JL Audio speakers sounded the best for me. However, in 8 inch subs and low power, it's hard to go wrong with any major make. I used a fosgate punch when I did this a couple of few years back, and the Alpine amp is behind that panel I put on the seats. Others have gone MTX or JL with similar arrangements though a little more power and all sound great IMO.
i agree. One 8" sub is quite enough for such a small car. I've got 1 JL8w6 behind the driver's seat in my 91 mr2 coupled with an Alpine HU, 2 Alpine V12 amps, with kicker comps for my 5.25"s in my doors, 4" for my rears, and 2 sets of tweeters. If you want crisp sound, don't be afraid to spend a little more on your amplifier and some high quality wires and fuses. They make all the difference in the amount of distortion you have at higher volumes.
yea so if i get the bazooka sub it had powered and non powered types, if i get the non powered that means i dont need an amp, but if i get the powered i dont?
That little 8" isn't a bad idea at all. However, I came from a Mk2 Camry w/two 10" subs in a ported bandpass box. Being cheap, I just lugged it over and powered it off a 400W amp. Forgive the hideous photo, it's over 2 and a half years old.

Now, it's a bit large, but it fits perfectly under the hatch. "But... I wanna use the targa!" you say? No Problem! Lay the rear seats forward and roll the box onto the seats. Targa goes in without a problem. "But I wanna cram four people in there with the targa off!" you say? Disconnect the two leads to the box, and set it out.
The 10's were excellent. The bass wave was long enough to not escape much from the car, but loud enough to over-abuse your eardrums many times over.
To be honest, I left it in all the time. My tools backpack, laptop and all such fit around the sub box (or fit in the back seats), and the audio quality was good too.
