91 supra transmission problems...

My dad has a 91 toyota supra...no turbo or anything special just plain and the transmission has been acting funny. He said that sometimes to get it into third gear he'll have to press the gas real hard while it's in second then let off the gas to make it change to third...by this way this is an automatic...Another time he said he could hear it try to go into third gear, but it never did in fact it went into some kind of neutral where nothing happened. He said it only happens once the cart is warmed up and has been running for awhile. Me and him haven't really had a chance to look at it yet because we're busy during the week, but we were wondering if anyone knew what was wrong and what it'll take to fix it.Thanks!
