Question Same Ol' Same Ol' 5mge to 7mgte.

Well I will start off by saying "Hey what up!" This is my first post here. As im sure you can tell from my name I have a Cressida. 1986 5spd -w- TEMS maybe LSD I havnt looked yet just got it. So as usual the 5mge is leaking all types of oil and the valve seals are bad. So its A. Reseal the 5mge or B. Put in the 7mgte. I have been searching a bit for a write-up and have gotten a lot of dead links. I found one that gave me a list of what I will need and im sure I will be able to do this with little problems. So the only questions I will have are one the 7mgte motor and trans swap. Here we go.

1. Does anyone have a link to a good Cressida or Supra swap write-up?

2. Where would I go to get the turbo piping?

3. What drive shaft? I heard that I will need a new driveshaft.

4. What year Supra wireharness and ecu should i look for? 86.5-88?

5. Where to get the motor and trans? Any place in the midwest?

I am sure I will think of more but thats about it for now.

Thx,
Erique

In order:

1. Celicasupra.com

2. Get it from a 7m parts car, excpet the downpipe that will have to be custom. Any midas should be able to pull it off in a pinch, or a good exhaust shop to get stainless and mandrel bends.

3. depends on your tranny choice. Stick with what you have, and you can keep it. Change to something like an R154, and you need another.

4. Doesn't matter, but stick to the same years where possible (87-88, 90-92). Avoid the 89, as they had some mid year changes that are not well documented, but significant enough to throw a wrench in the plans.

5. Jarco is my personal preference based on what I have seen up close, and by reputation, but expensive. If you know a good running supra with a rusted out body, you could get almost everything you need from there. Otherwise, I'm sure others have had good experiences with engine sellers and can put some more names up.

Also, http://www.toyotacressida.com if you haven't already. No write-up on the site itself, but I'm sure if you *search* the forums, you'll find out some useful stuff.

Your 5M-GE (or any Cressida, for that matter) is front-sump, and anything from a Supra/Soarer would be mid-sump. You'll need to swap oil pans and all related hardware (pump, etc). Not too daunting of a task, but just a head's up.

Your current transmission is a W58. It should hold the 7M-GTE, provided that it's currently in good shape and you've got a good clutch.

Being a Cressida with 5-speed and TEMS, I'd be VERY surprised if it didn't have LSD.

Thx for the info. I decided as long as the 5m holds up over winter i am going to do the 7mgte swap for sure. The only thing that is driving me nuts is that the cam seals are leaking and its leaking onto the header causing smoe from the engine bay. I will just have to live with it i guess. I will do my best to do a full write up. The tranny I have now is not in great shape so i will need a new one. i will be sure to have a new shaft on hand from the r tranny. hopefully i wont have to do some custom mess wit that. I work at toyota so I will have all the info i will need book wise. I hope to go around 300-350 hp with this thing. as for the down pipe i will have to look into that. I wonder, if i can get the right specs ill just mod one to work. im sure it will be cheaper than having one custom made. and better than that crinkle bend stuff... well ill be hitting the books and saving for a while. thx again for the info..
