5ME Head and cooling problems

Hey guys,

I decided to get rid of the belt driven fan of the front of my engine recently, and replace it with thremofans. I bought a 14inch and a replacement air con fan, and let me tell you it is the worst AU$200 i have ever spent. The car had cooling problems before, and I was hoping that by removing the stress of the belt driven fan would make it run a little cooler. Well suffice to say i have cooked the head, the car is now making tapping noises from the rocker cover and not running on all its cylinders. My father has gone to great lengths in calling me an idiot.

I will admit the fan setup i had tried is not as good as it could be. Does anyone have a working thermofan combination that I could possibly fit to my car to stop it from overheating?

I may have to fit a new head, in which case I will be fitting a 5MGE head and a 7M turbo manifold.

Thanx guys

Find and fix the cooling problems first. The electric fans are ALWAYS less efficient on the Supras. Anyone that has road raced any generation will attest to the fact that hard running on e-fans, no matter what brand or idea was tried, is a quick way to overheat. All that went back to clutch driven fans with factory fan shrouds and "miraculously" had the overheating problems go away. Those that also upgraded the rads benfitted further.

Besides, the drag your clutch has on the motor is really only replaced by more drag from the alternator (the more juice drawn, the more the alternator takes in energy to turn it...that's how they work). Energy aint free, and the alternator may in fact resist more than the fan, given efficiency losses in generating electricity compared to directly turning the fan.
