need help about engines

well here's my issue. I'm getting an '88 Supra and it's engine is only a 7M-GE. Now i was wondering, i wanted to get rid of the engine because i wanted to go with either the 7M-GTE, or the 1JZ. Now i really want to know the differences between the two, and whether i should even change the engine or just restore it?

Also, if i wanted to do the engine swap with one of the two, what price would i be looking at? CDN $ please?

anyways thats about it, and i hope someone here could help me out.

There are some knowledgeable people here, but your best bet is to look over at Supraforums.com. They've got FAQ's there that list most of these things out.

The 7m-gte converstion isn't too tough, or too costly. But acquiring the parts can be the fun part. It also depends what you're going from:

'86.5 - 88 or 89+
Auto -> 5spd, etc...

For your year, the fun part would be the wiring harness. It's been discontinued from Toyota. So, you'd need to find one in a halfway decent condition (which is tough as is, heat soak kills those things) and pull the whole thing. Buying new isn't even an option.

For a 5spd -> 5Spd you'd probably want to go with the R154 with is the turbo transmission. It's known good to 600+ RWHP, where as the W58 is known to pop in the 300 range. Also, you'd need the matching ecu (Auto/5spd, Turbo/NA, 1986-1988 or 89+) to go with it. Beyond that and some other things, it's all money and time.

Personally, I'd stick with the 7m-gte. Do the head gasket while it's out of the car (and do it properly (Machined Block & Head, ARP Hardware and a Metal Head Gasket)) and you'll never worry about it again. The big dilemma with the 1jz is if it breaks, ever, for any reason, obtaining 1j specific parts are a pain in the ass while the 7m is quite common. Sure the TT is a nice option and a higher base power, but the extra costs (you'd need an entire 1jz front clip) just don't make it worthwhile to me.

I know nothing about total costs, I started with a turbo 5spd model. I also know nothing in CDN Currency.

To do a 1j swap with clip, you're looking into the 5-7k CDN mark. 7m swap is about the same with a proper engine and transmission re and re, except of course you have a fresh rebuilt engine versus taking your chances on the used 1j. Huge time investment too in getting it to work. Supraforums is a great place to start. We have 3 swaps within the Toronto Surpa Club, so coming out to one of our meets may help you figure out what you really want to do.

That said, I'm partial to the 7m myself. Any search you do at other forums will net you some heated flame wars between those that think the 1j is the engine of the gods, versus die hard 7m proponents. Weed through their crap and there are some real nuggets of information.

You state you have an 88 NA. I did the 1JZ swap into my 88 NA. It is not the best platoform because the front cross member changed in 89. The 1JZ needs an 89 or newer cross member to mount. Not to mention the RHD to LHD wiring and plumbing mess. So if you are up to the work then go ahead with the 1JZ. If not then the 7MGTE is the easier swap. I did my swap only because there aren't that many 1JZs in the US vs the 7M. I wanted the path less traveled.

7M all the way. With some head work(exhaust side), these motors will rival the 2JZ-GTE.

7M: 2954cc 83mm bore 91mm stoke one CT26 turbo 232hp

1JZ-GTE: 2491cc 86mm bore 71.5mm stroke two CT-12A turbos 280hp

Seems like Jeff Watson @ Champion Toyota still has some new harnesses:

Holy ****. Now that's a miracle. He must have stockpiled, Toyota discontinued the pre-89 harnesses long ago.

The only people with 7M headaches didn't fix it right in the first place. Cut corners, get lazy, go cheap and you suffer. Build smart, spend in the right places, research thoroughly yourself and you have a winner for less money than it takes to get the average 1j running.

Each to their own however
