ive read a lot of posts about re-torqeing, and it seems the majority of supra owners approve.. BUT, my rebuild already has over 5000kms on it.. I havent had any problems with the headgasket, but ive got to pull everything off this weekend to change some gaskets/hoses and such, and was pondering re-torquing the head, while I was there.. It was a stock toyota headgasket, and toyota headbolts (new I believe) that were used.. It was torqued to 72 ft.lbs...
So, what is your opinion? do I chance doing a re-torque so long after the rebuild, on a stock gasket? or just leave it the way it is?
If so, I understood that the correct re-torque meathod is to break the headbolt loose, then retorque to 72 ft lbs, One at a time, in proper sequence (as per TSRM instruction) correct?
Did you retorque them after running that engine for a bit after doing the rebuild like you were supposed to? Since you already torqued them to 72 when you rebuilt that engine it's only a matter of popping off those valve covers and checking that they haven't let off.
The thing with retorquing from the stock 54 or whatever up to the infamous 72ft/lbs is that you do NOT want to back the bolts off and relube them before retorquing, just simply follow the tightening pattern and progressivly increase the tension in 3 stages.
no I didnt re-torque them afterwards.. It was my brothers car at the time.. When I got it, it already had about 3000kms on the rebuild, and Ive driven it another 2000..
The headgasket was already gone when he had the engine rebuilt.. So it all had to come apart anyway.. And it is to my understanding, that even if the bolt did back off a little bit, than wouldnt it still take more than 72ft/lbs to "break" it loose?? Which is why I was told to back them off 1/4 turn or less, just to loosen them, then re-torque..
