Question '89 Manual Tranny Fluid

Hey,
Just recently I had my tranny fluid changed. Before I had it changed it shifted perfectly smooth. Now with the new fluid it seems to grind a whole lot when I down shift. And when its cold it is very hard to even get it in gear before its warm. I've heard of people using auto. tranny fluid in manuals and it makes it shift perfect in cold or warm conditions. But if there is a problem with this please let me know, also if there are any other fliuds out there that will work for this. Thanks.

what did you use? Manual Trannys use gear oil not tranny fluid. I used Royal Purple 75w-90 and its -15c out right now. Tranny is good, doesn't shift right when its cold but once it warms up its perfect.

Use 75w-90 or 80w-90 gear oil in the standard tranny.

I believe there are *some* manual trannies out there that use ATF, but this doesn't mean that you can go ahead and put it in your Supra. I have no clue whether you can or you can't.

Yea they changed the oil and put in a synthetic gear oil. Before it was just conventional gear oil and it seemed to work better. My brother has a 5 speed F-150 and it shifts so much better with the auto tranny fluid. I was just wondering if it would do any harm to my tranny. I hate the way it downshifts with this synthetic stuff, it grinds like crazy and my tranny is in great shape too. I hate when its cold too, I literally have shove it in gear very hard. Any other info. would be great. Thanks.

I used redline mt-90 in my 5spd for my last change. It felt beautiful afterwards, no more difficult shifts into reverse or 2->1. Just make sure you buy 4 bottles since they're packaged in US quarts, but the tranny takes 3 metric quarts iirc.

I'd be very sceptical of that shop if your tranny was worse after the fluid change

Redline MT90 is the only thing I'll run in my manual gearboxes.

Anyone know where I can get some Redline MT90 for a good price? Or can I find it at any auto parts store? Thanks for the advice, I hope it works as good for me as it does for you.

My local Napa carries MT90. I use it in my W58 5spd too.

careful you have to mix redline. Stir it up or something. all the goodstuff will sit at the bottom if you don't!

Royal Purple is premixed so no worries

AMSoil needs to be mixed aswell

These are all good synthetics.

Um...No?

Tell me how something sits in the bottom of the gearbox. Ot how it doesn't settle to the bottom in the time between installation and running your car? Seems to me that everytime you'd move that tranny it'd get mixed on it's own.

once its in there yes. but you should at least shake up or turn the container upside down when you are going to fill it to mix the thicker stuff to make life easier.
