Talking New to Supras, Need Help

I just bought an 86 Supra with the 2.8L in it. Yes, I already know it sucks. But, I only paid $500 for it and it is near showroom condition.
My first mod needs to be a solid axle rear end, I plan to build a super stout motor and need to get the rear end to where it can handle 500-600hp.
HELP, what is the way to go on this??? What are good donors?? I just know I will blow that IRS rear end apart.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

That 2.8L doesn't suck, thank you very much.

Similar year RWD Celica (non GT-S) had a solid axle in the same chassis, but from what I hear, these rear suspensions do NOT interchange.

I think you're going to have to go totally custom-fabrication for this one. Welcome to the old-school Celica Supra/Cressida world.

HP isnt everything, power to weight is EVERYTHING. So when you build the car up focus on what you can do to get a high torque ratio compared to the HP. Supra engines, including the oldies have a mean amount of grunt, but the performance output is solely based on how deep your pockets go.

And you suspension I suggest seeing someone who deals with Diffs for a living...they may be able to trick yours up with some mods that ARE alot cheaper then getting a completely custom made rear end on it. Dont make up your mind until you have someone look and say that it wont take that much HP. You'd be supprised what the Celica and Supra diffs are capable of under alot of load. I'm more experienced with V8 9" diffs in classic Fords, but I do know a little about the Toyota gear as my first car was a Toyota and my Last car bloody better be on too ...and ALWAYS before looking for or ordering in parts I have a friend that works solely with suspension, diffs and custom manurfacture for those of us that require it. It's good to find someone like that whom you can ask, and if needs be go through for work.

You'll save lots of cash in the long run which can be spent on performance parts if you get advice from the right people who can inspect what you already have. Supra is a brilliant base to work from...
