please help-had an engine change

Hi every1

I don’t know much about cars I need to stress that first. Ok I have 86 MA70 non-turbo supra and I just replaced engine with the second hand one that has done only 70 000 km. my mechanic says it’s a top notch engine, the best he could find. But on the first day after 30 min of driving it started to overheat. I noticed that the water in the radiator is red. My mechanic said its just rust and that I need to wash the radiator and the engine. Well I washed it 4 time now and its still overheating and water/coolant is still red. I cannot return the engine so what should I do.

I have the same problem before this engine change only now I have a sticker, few stains and scratches and I’m 2000$ poorer. And yes my brand new radiator is now probably stuffed up too.

Can any1 please advise what I should do?

Thanks

Get your hands on a Compression tester and see what each cylinder reads. Even better, if you've got a leak down tester.

Yep.

If it does turn out to be the all-common blown head gasket (BHG), take your ass right back to your mechanic.

did he use toyota anitfreeze cuase thats red, not green. also you must do a compression test. as long as the highest and lowest is within 15% of each other its fine. if not then you have a blown headgakset (BHG) and go back to you mechanic with an attitude.

if that is fine then.. our motors have 3 very weak attributes. the Headgasket is sandwiched between an aluminum head and an iron block. if you arent careful when you warm up the motor they heat up at differant rates and the head can warp, and the headgasket can leak. you can fix this by having the head and the block milled true then torqueing the bolts to 85lb/ft rather than the 54lbs that toyota reccomends. that will fix it for good.

the other is bad oiling, it is very tempermental and the engine is very sensitive to even 1 quart low of oil. so check it as much as possible, and keep it topped off.

the third is the cooling system. also just enough to keep the car cool, if something goes wrong or gets blocked the engine will overheat. i suggest if the compression checks out, getting the cooling system flushed out. that will get rid of any blockages eliminate one common problem. if that doesnt fix it. then remove the top two screws and check for leaves or grass inbetween the radiator and a/c condensor. after that there should be nothing wrong with your car and its all in your head, lol.

Not conclusively. You might have bad piston rings and such if there's low compression, but yeah, BHG is likely.

You probably already have it.
