remapping an 89?

My friend asked me why I don't get the computer remapped instead of going with the VPC/S-AFC combos. He drives an SRT-4 about 320whp. Apparently these things are easier to remap than scratching your left nut. Is this an option? I'm noob to the supra tuning world

You cannot flash the EEPROM in the computer in the Mk3 Supras. If you could, that'd be one thing.

At the same time, explain to him what's good about Speed Density conversions (VPC) and that even SRT-4 guys use AFC's.

@65chevyman, why not just get a tuning computer? You map, you only have one preset map to use with your current setup, but if you change something major down the road or are forced to, you have to re-flash again. Then you run the risk of bricking your ecu. Either way, since you cannot flash the computer in the first place, just get a piggyback. You will be happy.

Its either a piggy back or a stand alone fuel management system.
I've also heard of remaps but not popular among street tuners much.

The only "remaps" out there were from a couple of Japan based tuner shops, and nobody is really sure what they did anymore. Besides, they were fixed maps too. The only remapable over here was the techtom setup, which was more expensive than a conversation with God, and only 2-3 shops in all of North America were using it. Of that, only one was of a caliber I would have trusted and he was the most expensive of them all.

You could look to a MAFT pro. Allows speed density, high degree of tuning available, but it is still a glorified piggyback at the end of the day...

As Bob said, they're all glorified piggyback systems that can't get around some limitations (e.g. Fuel cut) unless you go full standalone (e.g. AEM).
