Newbie questions

I just purchased an 89 N/A Supra with 90,000 miles from my brother-in-law. Although he was religious about doing all required maintenance, the car hasn't been driven much (2000-3000miles a year) in the last 6 years. My questions are: First, about the head gasket. Knowing that he never abused the car (probably never seen redline), and there are not now and will not be any mods, how long can I reasonably expect to get from the stock head gasket. Second, other than changing all the fluids, filters, and belts (which I'm in the process of doing), Is there anything you reccomend to extend the life of the vehicle? Any other known maintenance problems?
All advice is greatly appreciated.

Regular maintainence and a new head gasket would probably be more than enough to get the car to go much more than the 90,000 miles you've got on there right now.

It's tough to say when the head gasket will go, I could say that it could go tomorrow. It might also go up to 100,000 miles from now. I just hope that your HG will last a bit longer thanks to the religious maintainence, but no guarantees.

If you have the funds right now, you might even want to take care of the head gasket before it goes - you'll prevent any potential damage to your engine this way. Machine the head, get the block surface as clean/smooth as you can, stick in an OEM gasket (I stress OEM, as aftermarket gaskets can be a bit shoddy), and torque down a fresh set of head bolts to 72lb-ft (Factory spec is too low at 55 +/- 3lb-ft.). Put new valve seals, camshaft seals, timing belt, etc, and you'll have a Supra running in tip-top shape.
