Is Staggering really necessary for MkIV's

Did a search to see if this topic had been covered. I would like to use 255/40/17's all around on my Mk IV, however I don't want to lose grip upset handling etc. Is staggering the wheel and tire sizes absolutely necessary?

Not if you're buying new rims. Yes if you run the factory ones, unless you can find a tire that has a working range of 8-9.5...will look funny though with a bulging front sidewall and a tucked tread on the rear.

You will find straight line grip reduced when you stomp on it, and the front will get squirmy from the extra sidewall flexing.

Only if you want your Supra to perform reasonably under acceleration and cornering.

Even with aftermarket rims, a 255/40 front&back combo would cause cornering slop AND oversteer. Especially for a 'bpu' mkiv Supra, 255's are far too narrow in the rear.

I know my Z came stock with 225 front and 245 rear, and when pretty much everyone upgrades their wheels, they go with 245 front and 275 rear, usually on 8.5/9.5 width wheels or 9.5/10.5. The wider setup in the rear definitely aids traction and handling properties of the vehicle.

My current setup:
19x8.5 front, 245/35/19 tires
19x10 rear, 275/30 tires

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info. What offset would y'all use for a 9.5-10" wide wheel in back and a 8.5-9.0" wide wheel in front?

Thanks Again!!!

if you look up the Ro_Ja website, they have all the applications listed with offsets, very helpful!
