3rd Generation lost Boost

Ok here is the deal I was loosing boost about one to two pounds. Car still ran fine but i figured i would see if anything was wrong so i checked all the intake piping, all were fine could not see anything out of the ordinary. The only thing i saw was that the oil filler cap was a little loose i tightend it down and went and drove it and it was back to normall. So I was wondering if anyone knew why this would be. Thanks

Also under full throttle in first and second gear the turbo or the intake makes a whistling-schreeching noise. I have an aftermarket filter cone style on it. Do you think it is just the air going through it, or somethin in the turbo. I know kinda hard to tell without hearing it but if someone else has the same kinda noise they might be able to help. Thanks bgrieger and Jeeves you have been a great help and realy now your stuff. Thanks again.

Never heard of the oil cap thing...odd...

Now, an odd squeal? You will hear the turbo more with a filter, but it depends on what you hear. Try this...remove the accordian hose. Grab the turbo impeller by the nut (wait till the engine is cold and off...hope that wasen't a needed statement) and try to move it around. Ensure that it spins freely, and that there is very little play left to right, and none in and out.

Let me know what you find.

bgrieger's on the same track I'd guess. Turbo having too much shaft play = dead/dying turbo.

As for the oil cap... I think that's pure coincidence. The head (where you pour the oil into) has nothing to do with boost. If it did, I can guarentee that those valve cover seals would leak and spew before an oil cap started to loosen.

Yea i didn't know how or why the oil cap would do anything. But it is all still working. As for the impeller shaft it is tight all different ways and spins with no trouble. So i don't know. It is about the only thing still on the car that hasn't been replaced, except for the block. The person who had it before me had to do alot of work to it. I got all the maintnence records with it. He put 3 head gaskets in and lots of other stuff. Almost 30 thousand dollars over the entire time he owned it. We got bored one day and added it all up. And i bought it for 1000 at a dealership. so i cant' complain to much. But i will keep you posted if anything new happens. Thanks
