Funny enough, I remember the Cressida (same motor as you) fuel pump to be practically silent with the key on.

So your pump may be good. I don't think the key-on test is a very good way to tell in this case, however.

My first Supra, an 85 L type which is still running (with my sister) is just about like any other FI car, if you turn on the key the fuel pump will run for about 1-2 seconds then turn off until you start the engine. This is to prime and pressurize the fuel system. It will not stay on unless the engine is running.

That's correct, we had an issue when we were dropping in my new motor the first time. Wanted to listen to some music, but I had a 1/3full tank of 91Octane. Well, we kicked the key on to On, and then "WTF is that... OH SHIT!"

Nothing says Lovin' like a 15ft puddle of 91Octane under yer ass.

Moral of the Story: Bring a boom box when dropping in your motor.
