USA Turbo Problem

Hey everyone! Im a noob on this site and found that this would be the best place to get more info. So far my new/new to me 1987 Supra turbo targa. Has had one major ploblem, i believe that the turbo has gone or something to that fact. I just bought it and took it to the "best japaneese shop around" yeah right! and they gave me the ok for the front to back inspection. Ok! Well since that(only a month or so) the brakes wore down and chewed up my driver side front rotor Then white smoke began to bellow out the back only under decel or 19-20psi vac. I narrowed it down to the turbo then. I thought that the seal in the turbo for the water cooling went but upon further inspection i found that there was tons of shaft play. Mind this was only month after i got the ok from the shop. Now it sits down there for three days and they still havent called me!!!!! The guy who owned it before me put 7K in new stuff it it and it all had warranty. When i told the shop that they said "well turbo warranties are kinda touchy" Bull they are there a warranty.

No, Turbo warranties ARE very touchy. If you push a turbo FAR beyond it's capabilites and it breaks, that's your fault, if you let stuff get in the turbo, it's your fault. Can't expect a shop to replace an expensive part like that just because you dropped a bolt in (not that you did) now can you?

And just for the record: 3 days isn't bad. I'm sitting on far more than half a year.

Well now they are scoping the head gasket to see if thats the problem. O and on the other hand there wasnt any bolt dropage LOL! I was only pushing 12psi when this all began never pushed more than 15 and it has a MHG. They think that the HG was a faulty one. Im sad that i have to lose the car for some weeks but i plan to have them take up the bill. Sorry about your withdrawl of boost. On the other hand it will give you some time to get points back on your licence LOL.
Thanks for the feed back all the other forums online suck they never talk back just ask questions.

I don't know a single person that has ever had their turbo warranty honoured except from Toyota itself. They all come back and state "overspun, underoiled, wrong oil, over oiled etc". Whatever they know you can't prove you did right.

Angry

true but i con howecer prove they did something wrong. not to mention the fact that they could have a lwsuit on their hands if they screw with me. I brought the car in before i bought it and had them do an $85 check front to back everything from compression to tires. Well they messed that up and under the state of colorado law when they give a false diagosis of a vehicle that leads to premature failure of the car that was their resposibility. Hopefully they boroscoped it today and they think its the HG if it was manufactor defect they replace. crossing my fingers.

My friend has blown up more than 4 CT26's pushing 14psi of boost on a factory motor. Very easy to do. There are reasons the CT26 and fuel system are paired at 12psi.

Proving that they didn't catch a 'failing' turbo doesn't mean squat. A turbo can go out in seconds if oiled improperly.

so you wouldnt suggest more than 12psi. Well thats good to know. Ne way its getting rebuilt for around $300USD. What other supporting mods do you think would lessen the chance of another blow up?

On any stock CT26 I would not push 12psi. I've seen way too many of 'em to blow up past that to say otherwise. Some upgrades are safer beyond that but the 60-1 upgrade (an upgrade for the stock CT26) really raises some questions about rotating mass (amount) compare to the size of the stock shaft. Makes me real leery.

Personally, the only way to prevent 'em from blowing up, is to go with a turbo of the proper size/spec for your needs.
