USA overdrive not working

The overdrive gear is not working on my 1990 Supra. Bummer. A mechanic told me today that the transmission needs to be rebuilt for $2K. Before I consent to the rebuild, I wish to hear from Toyota experts to see if my mechanic is correct.

The super-cool 1990 Supra shifts into overdrive gear only 25% of the time for the last two weeks and does not shift into overdrive gear 75% of the time. The mechanic said the trans has black fluid and burnt parts. Won't a change in thermostat or solenoid fix this? Thank you in advance.

A thermostat? I don't see how a thermostat will help this, but I've got R154 love. Sorry.

It's the "fan clutch" afterall. After talking to two transmission mechanics who told me that the transmission on the 1990 Supra needs to be overhauled for $2400, a third transmission mechanic told me, after talking about his concern for the pope, that the fan clutch was stuck causing the excessive noise at high rpms. Moral of the story: always get 2nd and 3rd opinions before major work. [Jeeves: your Supra is boss, groovy, keen and way too cool.]
