Hey all, I'm new to the Supra scene so please forgive any stupidity. I'm going to check out a 87 supra turbo tomorrow and I was wondering what I should be looking for, as far as common problems. I know blown head gaskets are a major problem with this car, so how would I know if the head gasket was good or not? Also, I was wondering if these cars have stock boost gauges in them. If so, how accurate are these gauges? The turbo should produde 5-7.5 pounds of pressure, correct? Besides checking for shaft play in the compressor wheel of the turbo, how can I reassure this turbo is healthy? What is the easiest way to check for turbo health? Are there any other common problems I should be looking for? Please help me choose the right supra!!
Well first off i would do the shaft play examination and try to bring a compression tester w/ you. (it usually is a thing that has the threads of the spark plug, if u didnt know) Then i would bring it to a mechanic, and one that you know will check compression, shaft play and just about everything else. (very important) and last the test drive. Make sure that the car's suspension is good by going over some bumps and shit to listen and feel weather they are kinda rough.

What are some signs of an upcoming BHG? How much are compression testers if i were to buy one (should be at 142 pressure?) ? How can I get to the compressor wheel to check for shaft play, and how much play should there be? Thanks...
Also, I was wondering if I could re-torque the HG bolts to the proper specs to prevent the HG from blowing. If not, what would have to be purchased to make the HG bulletproof so I won't have to dick with it later on in the future? Thanks..
signs of a bhg are cream under your oil cap, burning coolant, with 2 of my blown headgaskets, u could smell the coolant burning, with one, we actually didn't know it was bad untill we took the head off...to keep it bulletproof? or closest to it...u can do 2 things...1 is i would put ARP head bolts...don't retorque the stock ones....arps run about 125 i believe...then if ur gonna seirously boost it, get the block and the head machine shopped, then put a metal headgasket...if u cannot get them machined, get the head checked for leaks, at most parts stores...then sand both the block and the head down, and put a factory hg with tha arps...one of the main reasons our headgaskets blow is because of the week headbolts.

Hey man if you are really serious about getting the boost up and better HG life, go MHG (metal head gasket) get the ARP bolts for sure only way to go it.

I'd say that machining the head is imperative in any case, and doing the block as well if you're putting in a metal head gasket. I'd never chance it with not machining the head.
If not going metal, I stress an OEM (read: Toyota brand) head gasket.
How hard are those ARP bolts to get in? How long would it take? If the engine was rebuilt/is semi-new, do you think just the ARP bolts could save the HG? Could I boost 10 lbs with just the ARP's and still be safe? How much boost can this fuel system supply safely? Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.
This fuel system can supply 12psi MAXIMUM in stock form.
Those ARP Bolts/Head Studs (I prefer Studs) would only be good to be put in if you've replaced the head gasket. On an installed motor it's a bad idea to pull out all the head bolts and replace 'em, that's asking for a BHG.
If the HG was good, and the bolts were tightened to 75+ ft-lbs of torque, potentially. ARP hardware is the only way I go anymore.
If you don't up the boost, or mess with fuel on 10psi with ARP hardware you should be fine.
