good Lord...BHG after buying mk3

Well guys, I'm kind of SOL. On Friday I purchased a 89 supra turbo, and on the way home she overheated. And by "on the way home", I mean it overheated after driving on the highway for less than ten minutes. The temp gauge kept rising and rising. Eventually the needle hit the red and I finally pulled over on the highway. No smoke was coming out of the tail pipes, but there was a little amount of white smoke coming from the engine. The oil pressure seemed kind of low, although I don't know what the stock gauges normally show. I looked in the coolant overflow tank, and there was oil in it. So I'm pretty sure it's a BHG. I had the car towed home, and now she is at the shop. They are going to look at it Monday. How severe is this BHG? Do you guys think I killed the engine by driving it for 30 seconds while it was in the red? The thing is, the old owner of the car drove it for at least twenty minutes to meet me, so he could have worsened the problem. When I first test drove the car, it never overheated because I drove it in town, and not on the highway. I should have had a block test done before I bought the car. Anyway, what is your guys output?

Also, If I wanted to get a MHG, do you think a shop would resurface the block/head and install the MHG with APR bolts if I payed them extra money? Or will they have to put the stock HG in there with the stock bolts and shitty torque?

Help me out guys, I feel like an idiot for buying this car.

I'm not sure on how much damage coulda been caused... but it all depends on tha shop...for example...my shop cannot resurface n e thing...we get them sent out to twin city's or napa, or something like that...but if the shop has the tools, im sure they'd do it if tha price is right. b4 they replace the hg.. if they are not gonna do the mhg..make sure they check the head for cracks, etc. we all make mistakes man ... if it makes ya feel n e better i drove my car w/o oil and spun a rod...and now my cars sleeping as well

Killed...no. If the headgasket is toast, look at what you want from the car over the next 4-5 years. If you see yourself modifying it, spring for the MHG. If not, or very little, just replace it with a stocker. The head has to get machined almost certainly no matter which way you go, but the blocks are often fine for stock gaskets again. If you go metal, the block has to come out too, in which case doing rings and bearings is only a little bit more given the cost of removing and reinstalling it.

Unfortunetely, I don't I can afford to pay the shop to machine the head and the block in preparation for the MHG. Because they will charge me an arm and a leg to get the block out as well as the head. If I go with the stock HG and APR bolts, what should the bolts be torqued to? And how many pounds of boost could I safely run with this set up? Thanks guys...

Tanner

U can boost up to 9 PSI safely, atleast thats wut i sat at daily city driving, tha ARPs said on them what they get torqued to, I dont remember off tha top of my head...but make sure you send your head to get checked...because ur HG blows for a reason...usually its cusa tha headbolts...but it could b ur head, so u dont wanna waste tha cash then hav 2 do it again...so take ur head, i dunno where clovis is, but i kno NAPA is nationwide, they do it for 60 bux

Depending on the mileage of your MKIII and the wear on the head it needs to be resurfaced reguardless. I just did mine and I shopped around between several local machine shops. Because the head is longer than usual sometimes they have to be normalized (straightened). This can be costly. If you have the head off it is only right to get the valves and ports worked on too, given you have the time and most importantly the money. If you do not plan on generating over 400HP in the future dont worry about a MHG. Buy a head gasket kit that has it all, I have seen them for $140 or so.

You've run it into the red, at that temperature Aluminum heads are well known to warp, HENCE it's practically a requirement to re-surface the Head. I see you're in Clovis. What's your name?
