Hi, I just bought an 82 supra, the car will not rev past 4,000. If I try to give it any more than part throttle it falls on its face. I've replaced the coil, plugs, and wires. Any one have any suggestions???
i hav no clu about that car, but i can tell u my guy has an 87 celica with tha same problem...turns out theres this speed control box by tha throttle body, doesn't let him rev past 3 grand!
You could check into a fuel filter maybe. Don't know much about the car. Could be getting enough fuel to take it that high and not enough to go any higher. Let me know what is wrong when you figure it out.
A partially plugged exhaust can cause a limit in maximum RPMs and speed. In those early year Toyotas they used cat converters filled with coated BBs. When the cat started to break down, it let the BBs go into the muffler and plug it up. (Usually the cat did NOT plug up). Give the muffler a shake up/down to HEAR if there is any BBs in it. Replace cat and muffler. Also, an exhaust 'back-pressure' test can tell if there is restriction. Also, in a dark area, like the garage, or night time, look at the exhaust header pipe about 6" past manifold to see if it gets a cherry red glow when holding the throttle to that limit it quits increasing the RPMs. (Don't do this for more than a few seconds, as HEAT KILLS)...This glow is caused by hot exhaust gas being restricted. The thottle will not allow increased RPMs after a certain point due to this restriction.
4 years at the Toyota dealer in the 80s, I replaced a 100 or so exhaust systems, most under warranty because Toyota ended up allowing up to 100k on manifolds, cats, and mufflers.
A VERY dirty fuel filter WILL cause your RPM and SPEED limits, as it will only allow a certain amount of fuel to pass thru it. Are you revving it in park, at a stand still?? Or are you limited when driving ??? These older cars, unlike most of today's modern cars, did NOT have rev limiting.
My '89 has a speed limit of exactly 125mph, caused by the stock computer shutting down the fuel flow. Sneeky little Bast****.
Did you reset your ecu after installing the afm and other parts? Disconnect your battery for 30 seconds and drive it around for 15 minutes or so. Sign up on the celicasupra.com forum for more help.
