New to this forum and i have good feedback that it is the best!
I have a 1991 Supra Turbo (single) auto, it has developed a rattle at between 2400 - 3200 rpm, kind of a mechanical rattle, that does not occur befor or after this. This seems to come from the rear of the block, as well as having slightly noise tapping noise that increases with speed.
Can anyone elighten me to what this may be?
I do not think it is the bigend, and what are bigend symptoms?
The rattle is not present all the time, it kicks in and sounds like a 'loose diesel engine rattle' between 2400 - 3200 rpm and then goes. It does seem to come from the rear of the engine and there is no real increase in vibration, as i understand that a crank/bearing related kicks out a lot more vibration.
Ifit is a rod, is this bad news?
The 'bigend, is a slang term for the bottom end (crank, bearings, rods etc...)
I can get a low milage 7MGTE engine here in the UK for about £300, so not all will be lost is if is, but i would rather it were something else that could be repaired. The engine itself only has 95,000 mile on it.
When i did the oil and filter change i did not find any metal in the oil whatsoever, i take this as a positive sign?
The engine light has also come on today... does this shed anymore light? I will have an .avi clip later to demonstrate the symptoms i am on about. Will post is shortly.
hehehe personally i didn't have any warning...it just went from quiet to banging loud...but i have an 89 240sx, and it has a rod knock, you wouldn't know if you took it to 3400 rpms daily, but once u hit 3500 it starts pinging, and as u accelarate throught the rpms it grows, car still runs great lol, but it has an unmistakable rod knock that some people have just learned to live with, and others think is a cool sound coming from tha motor lol.
peace
The strange thing is that it rattles then goes after 3200-3400 rpm, and is not consistantly rattling at the same rev bands, it varies where it starts and ends by around 800rpm.... Engine still pulls strong!
Is it internal to the motor? Can you look under the hood and have a friend rev the car? If it's not a rod (a distinct tapping that speeds up with RPM and doesn't go away) then it could be the metal turbo heat shield. A nut could have worked it's way loose and letting it rattle at certian RPM bands.

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
It has been looked at by three mechanics now and they have all said that it seems to be the bearing! DOH!
So two options now......
1) Drop another engine in.
2) Rebuild the bottom end.
What would be involved in the bottom end rebuilt? They all did say that the knocking was in its early stages and thought that the crank will not be scored. Is there a way of just dropping the bottom end and replacing bust parts and putting it back together without the engine removal?
If an engine swap is needed are they 'easy' as far as swaps are concerned?
Also.... does anyone in the uk have a good block for sale?
fairly easy. Book time says 8 hours to pull, 8 back in, but the real world is a first timer could R&R in a weekend if they follow the TSRM and didn't waste time.
