Transplant auto to manual

Hi All

Thought i would start a new thread on this as plans have changed slightly.... i have found a tatty manual turbo with dead clutch but sound engine (full service history for its 130,000 miles)

I was wondering what the clutches were like to change on them, as i am considering replacing the bad bits with the good bits off my 1991 (same year and colour) auto, as this will save me the engine transplant.

What should i look out for if the clutch has been slipping on the car (completely worn clutch), and what clutch considering all i will run is a manual boost control at a max of 9psi and performance filter and exhaust. (Cheaper is better if possible )

I will post a picture once this mascurade has a finished, some time soon i hope

also are the auto and manual clutched the same on the turbos 1991?

Cheers

Rosco

If you have to remove the transmission from the motor, replace the disk no matter what (cheap insurance), and have the flywheel machined. Check transmission and engine oil seals while apart.

If you want to add to the engine performance significantly down the road, consider upgrading the clutch with a whole new assembly using a stronger pressure plate. That will ensure you should only need to do the clutch once until you start putting monster power through it.

I know that a small amount of BHP is lost through the auto transmission to the wheels, more so than the 5sp manuals.

I can't actually think of a car that comes with a modifed motor based on Auto/5Spd. Sure, tuning (With Hondas it could be VTEC) and such, yes, but different motors? News to me.

Either way, there's not a difference in the Toyota Motors.

There were differences between the NA/T, and the pre-8 and 89+ years. Minor head casting differences occured as well, but are very minor.
