7mgte rod bearings

My bro's 380hp supra about a month ago decided to blow a rod bearing we believe(due to the kind of knocking) for some reason, im just now finding the time to look at it.......anyone know an easy way to figure out how to locate the bad bearing if it is even that??

Since it all has to come out in pieces anyhow, it seems that will be easy...not like you'd replace one bearing and put it back together with the rest being used...

Pull the motor. It's 99% likely to be rod knock. That means Rebuild. No reason to isoloate which pison.

If it was/started knocking you can pretty much assume it's a rebuild.

if you are really desperate for a general idea of where your knocking is coming from, i suggest you go and buy an automotive stethoscope. you can get one at any local auto parts store for a real cheap price.

rev the car to 2-3k, listen to where your knock is coming from.

however, like alot of people here have stated, any type of rod knock will require some decent amount of labor. of course you can band-aid your problem by dropping the pan and replacing the bad bearing.

however, you run a high risk of hitting rod knock again.

you want to check the crankshaft for scoring, check the engine/oil pan/oil pump/head for metal shavings. check the cam shafts for scoring that stemmed from the metal shavings which came from your rod bearing.

its work, but at least you know youre getting it done right.
