Does anyone know how to decode the VIN?

I've got a 87-88 Supra in mind and my bro wants to know some specifics about it like the engine code and stuff. I know that all of that info is in the VIN so does anyone know what the different numbers and letters mean?

In the beginning of the VIN:
JT2MA71 = Factory Turbo
JT2MA70 = N/A

Now, if you read it off where they stamped it on the firewall, they'll all say MA70, if you read it off the tag at the edge of the dash they'll all be right according to the above.

Now, there's an automated version, but it doesn't give you everything for free:
http://www.autobaza.pl/ab/en/web/productaa0100

This site, however, will give you all the info, put in the VIN on the right:
http://www.autocheck.com/consumers/g...n.do?sourceid=

On top of that, there's Toyota.com's Official VIN Decoder, but it doesn't work for the older models:
http://fleet.toyota.com/html/vin_decoder.asp

That shows my car as a: 5DR Door Van 2WD, with a 3MZ-FE, and a bunch of airbags. pfft.

Ok, thanks. So on the VIN plate on the firewall whats the engine code for the turbo and/or nonturbo? Sadly I think this baby was stolen then pawned off to a junk yard because all the words on the VIN plate on the firewall are gone except model number and paint code and the VIN on the dash is gone too. But my bro is still interested...

I would stay away from this one. No valid vin, no buy. It's a fast way to end up with license and insurance problems.

He's looking on the firewall, IIRC it'll only be stamped with the Chassis code. Look at the edge of the window and the dashboard, that's the place to find the VIN.

You entered an invalid VIN

Your VIN needs to be:

Exactly 17 characters.
For a vehicle manufactured after 1980 (1981 or later model year).
Without the letters I, O or Q.
When all else fails, go to ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyot...67161155QQrdZ1

And what do we find on that page?
