USA 1986.5 Tailights won't go off

I just bought a 1986.5 Supra with a 5 Speed, and I have two problems which I think are related. First off, the tailights wouldn't go off, so to save the battery, I have disconnected it until I can get it to the repair shop. Second, when I am running it, the warning light that shows the tailights on is always on. Anybody know what is going on here?

possibly the brake adjustment is off so the brake light switch is always pressed...perhaps the light warning indicator noticed one bulb is burnt out, or there is a short inthe sensor itself turning on the brake lights. Finally, the same warning light is used for the parking brake. That switch may be stuck.

Aint wiring a bitch...

try disconnecting the connectors on the back that connect to the lights.. that is held on to the white bulb holder.. and add dielectric grease .. worked for mine cuz ive been getting that dash light since i did my tail light conversion and now its fine.. also check if the screws that hold the light bulb down are tight

actually, I'm going to bet the "taillight out sensor" box is dead and causing the lights to run 24/7. If you pull the trim out of the trunk. It can be found behind the driver side paneling IIRC. It's a yellow box about the size of a pack of cigarettes.

1986.5 Supra Tail Light Out Warning Light

I also have the problem with the Tail Light Out warning light staying on. All my lights are working aswell. Just bought the car last month and this is what I've done so far:

1. Replaced the Tail Light Failed Sensor - Didn't fix the problem.
2. Tried all new Brake light bulbs - Didn't fix the problem. Put the originals back in.
3. Previous owner had installed Trailer Light wiring for pulling a motorcycle trailer. I removed the Trailer Light wiring all together - Didn't fix the problem.
4. Inspected all brake light bulbs. They all seem to be original except for one. The one that is different works just fine.

I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone else proved some.

Thanks

Talking 1986.5 Supra Tail Light Out Warning Light

///// U P D A T E for 1986.5 SUPRA Tail Light Failure Sensor /////

I reviewed my wiring diagram in my maintenance book and decided to cut the single Violet colored wire that comes out of the Tail Light Failure Sensor. This wire is responsible for illuminating my Tail Light Out warning on my dash. I then checked all my lights and they worked as they did before. So no more Tail Light Out warning light to annoy me.

In doing this I know I will not have that sensor to rely on for telling when I have a burned out tail light bulb. I personally feel that's no big deal. None of my other cars (00 Tundra and 99 Accord) have this feature either.

my 87 had that lit and I replaced the bulbs---all of em and jiggled all the wires--brakes worked. try this. on 86 and older find stop 15amp and remove it and 87to 92 remove 15amp efi fuse for 30 seconds. this stopped my problem.
