Hey, i've got an 87 supra turbo, and i've had nothing but problems since i've had it. I've put about $3000 in replacement parts(may not seem like a lot to some, but i'm 17 so thats a lot for me) and it seems when i fix one thing another thing goes wrong. Now, when i drive the car and i "get on it" and the rpms get around 3000 or higher i just hear this whining noise and i have no idea what it is. Its not when the turbo kicks in that it whines either, its when the RPMs are at 3000 and above, yes the turbo spooling then, but i've also had the turbo spool at 2000 rpm and it doesn't whine, only when the rpm is 3000 and above. Please help!!!
Does it sound like its definately from the engine? have you tried pressing the clutch out or dropping it in to neutral if its auto and revving it to 3000 to see if it goes or comes back in? Could be a front of transmission noise.

failing that, take the aux drive belts off one at a time and try it (but not fot long as the waterpump wont be turning and she will boil up) to elliminate or prove water pump, power steering, air con,alternator...if it sounds like its the front of the engine without these connected then could even be something like a cambelt tensioner or idler bearing which you wouldnt want to ignore.

My first turbo had a nicked fin on the intake side, wouldn't whine all the time but when I got on it and it got to really moving it'd make a helaciously funky noise. Other than that, you'll need to be a tad more specific. Can you hear it when just reving it? or does the motor have to be under a load?

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
If i rev the engine standing still theres no noise, its only when i'm actually driving. And the sound is definently coming from the engine. My friend seems to think it could be the bearings in the turbo, i'm praying that its not but i dunno. I dont know how to be more specific, its kind of a high pitch whine/scratching sound, thats the best i can do.
When you listen to the noise very closely and you are accelerating can you hear the noise from the rear of the car? I know on my car I used to hear a winding noise an it was the differential going bad.
OK i found a way to explain the sound coming from my engine.....It's like when you blow up a balloon and pinch the sides and the air comes out in that high pitch whine. Thats the best i can do. Thanks
sounds like a belt screeching.. replace your belts, nothing big but either way Supras are not great cars for a first car. You should've started with a Corolla or Tercel if you wanted reliability.
But if it doesn't do it while revving, that doesn't indicate belts. He's saying it only occurs when under a load.
Now, thinking about things that only occur under a load, the turbo won't spool if you just rev the motor, have to load it up. I'm still thinking it's turbo related.

If your in need of a turbo my one friend has a CT 26 with only 30,000 miles on the turbo its a ball bearing j spec turbo. He only wants $300 for it. If you would be able to spend that I could give him a call for you.
So the mechanic said it could possibly need a new head gasket and that could be making the whining noise. I do not have the money to replace it so unfortuately i have to get rid of it . So I've decided to sell my car. The link to the post for information is below.....
