Don't bother. Just buy the targa shell. There are structural differences as well. I'm sure someone has wasted their time and energy, but at the price of a decent shell, why bother. Swap over the mods you have and get rid of the hard top...
I have a shell wich is exactly that.seems like it would be alot more work then modding for the top,but what exactly are the structual diff's because looking at the 2 i cant see any?did the targa cars start out as hard tops?
No, the hardtop is lighter, and stronger than the targa. The targa's doors were reinforced to deal with the chassis flex and it has added weight (due to that) and the mounting hardware and such in the roof.
Targa curb weight is 80lbs more than hardtop.
IMHO Targa's leak, are heavier, and flex more but are more fun to drive in the summer with the top off.
I'd rather have the hardtop when all things are said and done.

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
If you are looking to compete in any way with the car, i suggest you forget the targa conversion. i have an 86.5 with a targa top, and it is far less rigid than my friend's 86.5 hard top. if you are really into the whole 80's fun in the sun cruisin' vibe though, go 4 it! i think its a nice luxury item.
killed the conversion idea i bought the targa shell for parts as i needed the core support and front clip.Im going to part the rest I got the car with no drivetrain, dash,or steering column its an 89 turbo let me know if anyone needs anything before the car gets scraped it is rust free clear title and core support was drilled out not cut its located in south eastern michigan
I concur. Iv'ehad both and I prefer the hardtop. It felt much better driving, corner it just felt better. My targa is squeeky sometimes and makes noises corner, it leaks like a siv. But nothing beats on on those warm summer nights.
