The right side is the passenger side, the left is the driver side. I'm sure that the weatherstrip doesn't quite meet the air inlet on the left side because there is a bolt head there for the core support. The weatherstrip would rub the bolt head and damage the weatherstrip. I'm sure the engineers were more concerned with that interference than having air blow on the battery.
