Thanks for the comments, even the unhelpful ones. I have the car with manual air controls not the automatic temperature control. Here is what the manual says on page 247. "4. Floor/windshield position - air flows mainly from the floor vents and windshield vents. This position allows the air intake to select fresh automatically. This is to clean up the front view more quickly. If you want to return the setting to recirculate mode, press the air intake selector button once again. Press the A/C button for dehumidified heating or cooling. This setting clears the front view more quickly." So the A/C compressor would not be running unless I select it. "5. Windshield..." Again it says I can turn on the compressor for faster clearing of the front view. These statements suggest the compressor would not be running under these settings unless I select it.

On previous cars I have noticed the compressor start when I select Defrost but not when I select the Floor/Windshield option. In moderate weather I usually drive with the fan on low, and Floor/Windshield selected, and the air flow on fresh. With these settings I do not expect the A/C compressor to be running.
