Im going to change my pistons and upgrade using arias pistons.(Maybe still undecided) I am also going to mate the pistons with eagle rods. I have a completely stock head, stock ct26 turbo, and the block is ready to have work done to it. I also have a 3 inch exhaust system. My goal this year is to eventually hit the 300 horse power(with other mods too) and have room to uprade later to eventually hit the 400hp mark. Now here are my qsts:
1) How big should I bore? What other brands other than arias are good/reliable?
-I heard going .30 over will thin out the walls and eventuall crack it. Is that true?
2) After breaking in the engine, how much pounds of boost is possible using stock fuel pump and stock injectors? (I don't want it to detonate the engine).
3) At what pounds of boost should I upgrade to be able to use 550cc injectors and walbro or denso fuel pump?
-Any other questions or comments will be greatly appreciated!
-please post coment or send me an e-mail at: o.pineda@sbcglobal.net
1. Boring is going to greatly increase your chances of cracking. At the most, I would go .20 over. JE pistons are very popular in the MR2 world.
2. The limit of the OEM fule system comes from HORSEPOWER, not BOOST pressure. Different turbos will make different power at the same boost level so you can not go by that. The OEM fuel system seems to be safe up to 275 rwhp or so.
3. See #2. 550s will get you from 280-340 rwhp or so.
If you are looking for more displacement from your 3s, I recommend doing a stroker over boring the block. Not only do you keep a solid block with less chance of cracking, but the stroker will also give better low end power gains, decreasing the effect of turbo lag. The easiest way of doing this (which I will be doing myself this winter) is to get a 5s crack, have it ground down slightly to accept 3sgte rods (the 5s crank is slightly larger at the point of contact, thus why it must be ground). A couple of mr2 owners have done this so far with massive gains over the 2.0 setup. I personally have a brand new from toyota 3sgte bottom end internals and all, but i am going to use the crank out of my 5s to do the stroker. I may end up boring the block anyways as some have done up to a 2.4 litre 3sgte and it is impressive. Let me know what you plan on doing, I'll let you know when i start my project. I am still contemplating using the stock pistons rods or upgrading now just so i don;t have to do it later. Atleast I can probably sell the new stock rods and pistons i have to eliviate some of the cost of aftermarket ones.
[BJekylandHyde,] what is your setup if you don't mind me asking.
1)Do you have a .20 over sized bore with forged pistons?
2)I want a built bottom end but going .20 doesn't seem too impressive. Why do you think going .20 is the better way to go?
3)What do you think about using the crankshaft from a 2.2 5sfe engine.(what are your thoughts about the stoker kit on a 2.0 short block?)
-chrwof8217 when you wrote that the crank has to be "ground down slightly to accept 3sgte rods (the 5s crank is slightly larger at the point of contact, thus why it must be ground)"
1)What do you mean by this? I want a clear idea of what i have to tell the machinist i know so he could get the job done right. Or else i will go to somebody else.
-Is there any website i could read up on this. Maybe somebodys number so i can ask questions? I haven't read too much on the stroker kit so a website would be very helpful.
2)Do you know of anyone that has done this stroker kit? I have a 5sfe crank that i just have to take out.
3)when you mention big hp gain, how much roughly are you talking about?
4)by using 5sfe crank and going .20 over, you mean that you will be a 2.4 liter engine right?
1)Do you have a .20 over sized bore with forged pistons?
I have a 100% stock, original bottom end with 200,000 miles.
My engine is original stock except for cams.
2)I want a built bottom end but going .20 doesn't seem too impressive. Why do you think going .20 is the better way to go?
I already answered that, so did chrwof8217. cracking
3)What do you think about using the crankshaft from a 2.2 5sfe engine.(what are your thoughts about the stoker kit on a 2.0 short block?
We are planning ot do this over the winter.
2.2 stroker > .02 over bore
JeckylandHyde, are you planning on using an aftermarket steel crank for the stroker? I have been contemplating whether the 5s crank will be sufficient at higher horsepower (like 500+)
If you happen to know of any preparation work that might be needed to get the 5s crank ready for high output that isn't "secret" I would appreciate it. I should have my crank out in a week or so (hopefully this weekend.) I am just curious if heat treating is the only thing that can be done, or if there are other options.
