Gen1 engine swap Question

i already did a search, couldnt find much on what i was looking for. i was wondering if there is anything that is a direct bolt in swap in an 86 MR2 that will have more power than the 4age that is in there. i know wiring harness will be an issue, but i am not worried about that. just want something to bolt to the tranny and sit in the same spot with little to no modifications. i know the 4agz-e fits but is there anything else that has more power than the N/A 4age? if not, how much hp does the z-e have? thanks in advance.

You really did a search?
Somehow I find that hard to believe.

I think on TN alone searching for "MR2 swap" would yield like 500 hits between MkIs and IIs and then you just have to look at teh title to find what you are looking for.
On top of that, googling it gives you like 5 million hits.

Anywho, any 4A motor will go in with one level of difficulty or another.
Your best bet is a 4A-GZE. Its the same motor as you have but stronger and with a supercharger on it. That can yield upwards of 200hp with some pretty minor modifications. It can go higher with more time and money, of course.
A 20v will go in, but will be a more difficult job than the GZE. Also, they really don't make a ton of power, but it's cool to rev to 9 grand =P

The ultimate swap is the 3S-GTE.
It's called a Mk1.5 (Mk1 with a Mk2 motor).
225hp bone stock with almost no upper limit other than the cash you've got.
The swap is somewhat difficult, so you'll probably have to pay someone to do it.

there is a hi-comp 4AG-E. you can either get the large to small port conversion manifold adaptors or you can just swap the large port head on there which will result in power loss over the small port head.

yes, i really did a search, and i did it again to make sure i wasnt a total retard. i checked the first 7 pages and everyting seemed to be gen 2 stuff, i am new to the whole toyota thing as i usually like big loud domestic v8's, but i am willing to try something new, so here i am in toyota land, and i like it so far, i am not totally sure what year the gen 2 stuff started, i know nothing about the driveline's, what is universal (if anything) between the 2 gen's or what these motors are other than the 4age and the 4agze which i am kind of familiar with. give me any year camaro or firebird and i can tell you almost anything you want to know about the car. just not with the mr2.... not yet anyways. i am very mechanically inclined, i have helped with some goofy sh*t in the past few years, 350 chevy in a chevette, 403 olds in an elcamino, and even helped a friend get his 383 nitrous fed malibu wagon into the low 11's, so i am not just some rice boy looking for or expecting huge horsepower out of a fart can swap, i am just curious what else if anything fits in my 1986 mr2, or if the swap would even be worth it. looking for something i can get out of a junk yard that will bolt in or weld in, i dont care, the "car" will be on the sand dunes with 12" wide paddles next spring, i am just looking for a cheap swap i can do that will bolt to my tranny. if the swap is possible i can do it, i am confident in that, i never pay anybody to do anything to my cars, i do it all myself. i am not looking for trouble, i am just looking for some answers to questions without looking over 100000 posts, i was hoping that somebody could put up a quick list of what fits in a gen 1 mr2. sorry for the long post i know people hate reading them, just venting about the fact that somebody insulted my intelligence without knowing me.

oh and by the way speedballtrix, it appears that by looking at your public profile, i can see that you have started a post yourself with almost the exact same question, motor and tranny swap options for your corolla

hmm....... ok

it's an 86.. so you should want an 87-89 mr2 tranny (c52.... little stronger, syncro's tend to go out less).

motors that will bolt in:
bigport 4age (early)
bigport 4age (later)
smallport 4age
bigport 4agze
bigport 4agze (jdm electronics)
smallport 4agze

then hybrid/custom setups like:
7age
7agze
7agte
4agte

etc

that should hold ya over for doing some searches

thank you for your help, i really appreciate it, that guy just got on my nerves in big hurry. you gave me exactly what i was looking for, at least now i know what to search for. you remind me of all of my friends on the forums at www.camaroz28.com , he reminds me of all the rice boys over on www.hondaswap.com that think their 1.5L automatic 4dr hondas can beat a blown nitrous fed v8 monster with a fart can and some stickers. i hope most of the people on this site are helpfull like you. thank you again for your help.

i can tell you from personal experience.... the smallport 4agze makes these cars quite quick!

i've surprised many cars with more cylinders than me... and it still isn't tuned right

Dude, I gave you exactly the info you were looking for.
I detailed 3 swaps that I thought were the best or coolest.

And just because I've asked the same question doesn't mean I dont know what Im talking about. Im no expert, but even experts need help now and then.

Everyone can see that I was polite when I answered your question, and you decided to be a jackass in return so you can f- off.

as pictured above

the geo prizm gsi is just the US 16V counter engine, without the Toyota stampings on the valve cover

(except for the very very rare 92 map gsi's)

I'm in the middle of swapping in a 20v silvertop 4age... but that's much more than a drop in deal, and they aren't available in the USA/CAN.
