My parking brake handle has to almost reach the straight up position now for it to grab. can it be adjusted or is it just stretched out and need to be replaced? thanks guys

Sounds like a bad ebrake cable. My deuce is the same way. Pull it STRAIT up... and it will barely hold the car. I almost lost the car once. I've adjusted mine a few times... just doesn't do the job. If I remember right you shouldn't leave it over winter with the ebrake up or it will help this problem develop sooner.

OK, thanks. I guess I'll just replace it and not waste time trying to adjust it. it is 14 going on 15 yrs old. Thanks Russ

The cable is easy to adjust. You just get under the car and there are 2 nuts you need to loosen and then adjust to where you need it and retighten them. It is easier than replacing the cable.

I have the same problem with my E-brake, not to mention that i live in hilly Duluth. I can only park in the backyard where it's semi-level... and every other blocks, following the sides of the hill. I'll try the cable adjustment first, then consider replacing it next. -Ferry

You can probably get away with adjusting it a couple times, but you're only delaying the inevitable.

your cables are getting stretched and they eventually will snap if you keep stretching em. Better look into investing in new cables.

And if you have the dough, it's best to replace all 3 at the same time, to avoid having to get under the car numerous times. It's a pain in the ass working around the fuel tank.

3 cables? are they in a set or do they have to be purchused separately? I'm guessing the main cable from the handle and the other 2 going to each rear wheel?

when i replaced mine, they came seperately. And, there aren't really any aftermarket companies that make em, so you're stuck buying em from toyota or partznet.

The partznet prices are better than your local dealer.

The front cable is around $25 and the 2 rear cables are about $60 a piece, but you can probably find em a little cheaper if you search around.

I replaced mine also. you cant go wrong with rockauto.com the prices are good there and I got my cables rather quick. Its an easy fix after you get all that plastic crap off of the bottom. it should take under an hour to fix.
