Need all the info you have on swapping FWD motors into MR2s....
I am looking at swapping an all aluminum 3.0 Duratec (the ones from Lincoln LSs, Mercury Sables, Ford Contour SHOs, Ford Tauruses, and similar, surprisingly, to the engine in a Noble M12) into an MR2. I currently have a mustang as a project car but would probably sell that in order to fund my project. I am a member over at turbomustangs.com and have been spending most of today trying to think of a car that this project would do well in.
Goals:
-Fairly reliable
-Low insurance
-Light weight, RWD platform
-Good gas milage keepin out of boost. (Good is ~28 highway, 22+ city)
-300HP (Intercooled) without over revving it (~6K) or too high of high boost. (Like to keep at or below 10psi.)
I am looking at V8MR2.com right now, and looking at the fitment pictures, considing that there is 2 cylinders less and is only a 60* V6 it should have plenty of room for some RHB5s and downpipes. :P
I would probably use the stock electronics for the most part simply adding on an MAF and some bigger injectors, plus of course the fuel system upgrades. I already have a fuel cell and shit like fuel lines and fittings from the mustang, I will have a welder, and will be taking machining and fabrication and will have access to CNC machines. I am probably going to get a Miller 200DX or similar welder this Xmas, and when it comes time to cut I will have stuff for that 2.
I need info on pretty much any project that has been done, any motor it doesnt matter, any setup, N/A, turbo, S/C nitrous, anything. What were the biggest obsticles in putting it in? What costed the most money? What transmission did you use, whyd you use what you did, pics of the linkage setup, basically a full writeup like V8MR2.com has.
The last one is important, how much did the whole project cost you? Nad is it reliable enough and drivable enough to be a dialy driver? I would like to make mine a daily driver, that looks nice. A clean body kit, nice set of wheels, A/C, Power steering (not as important as A/C), you get what I am saying. This car will be fairly well funded, although itll be almost a purely DIY setup.
Any info, ideas, or criticism is welcomed.
-Kyle
EDIT:Reading through his buildup of his suspension kinda scares me, as I am not that familiar with suspension setups at all...I wonder if I would run into the same problem even with my smaller motor.
