2nd Generation Power Antenna Issue

when i bought my car the power antenna wasn't working...but a friend of mine told me it was more than likely just the antenna mast that was the problem...i figured he was right because i could hear the antenna motor working when i shut of the car...at least i think it's the power antenna motor...anyway...i get the mast from toyota, which cost me about $44 CAD and i open up the assembly only to find the the two spool gears (the ones that essentially push and pull the antenna up and down) are missing!

as far as i can tell everything else is working fine, i just need those two gears...does anyone know if i would be able to get those off of any standard toyota? or does anyone have some of them kicking around? i went to the dealership and they wanted to charge me almost $300 for the entire assembly unit...thanks in advance guys

the only thing I can tell you is maybe check a couple junk yards.

The MR2OC "parts for sale" forum wouldn't be a bad place to check either.

Good luck!

yeah i was gonna hit a junk yard this weekend...i was just wondering if anyone knew if i could use the gears off of a corolla or whatever...and yes carcatz, it is the gears cause they're physically missing

i just can't believe someone would open up the antenna and take out the two gears and then seal it up like nothing...geez

maybe they just fell off. or someone else needed the gears. anyway, just see if the gears you're talkin' about mesh and fit...i think most are pretty much the same..nothing to lose..it's worth a try..maybe save some money

Buy it off eBay and call it a day That's a common problem for not just MR2's but a lot of other cars that have a power antenna.

okay i replaced the mast last year and the antenna worked like clockwork for the last couple months...now however, it goes up fine but doesn't want to come down...it will go down if you help the motor a bit by pushing it with your hand...but it won't do it on its on...i took apart the motor assembly and realized that the mast was in perfect condition, but the plastic gears were slipping and grinding...i just found it odd that it doesn't have any problem going up, but it slips when going down...has anyone come across this problem before?

i assume that if the gears are too worn down i will have to buy an entirely new assembly...i found a couple on ebay but none of them are for an MK2 MR2 WITH a spoiler...the dealer quoted me at over 200 for the assembly...if no one can help me fix this, does anyone have one they can sell me?
