everything's running great lately, the new tranny has a full-lock differential.... being an auto, I found that odd... but it does. the exhaust is incredible sounding with the obx header\mid-pipe.... and she's running cool and strong throughout the rev range.
what I'm wondering is:
the 3sfe crank pulley is slightly different that my stock 5sfe pulley... the 3s has a smaller diameter on the inside track for my alternator... simply because that pulley was designed for use on a fwd powersteering pump....
I've noticed my voltage is slightly lower that usual, but is still withing range.... it dims whenever I apply a load to the system. so I'm thinking of replacing the 3sfe crank pulley with my 5sfe pulley to correct the charging issues. any ideas? suggestions?
I don't know if that's a good idea. I thought harmonic balancers were crank specific. If the 5S's crank pulley is balanced for a 91mm stroke, then it'll just cause problems with your, now, 86mm stroke. You might be able to use a 3SGE or 3SGTE crank pulley though.
so what did you end up doing? i am thinking about the 3sfe swap too. reading your previous post was really helpfull. does the 3sfe engine just drop in? what modifications do i need to do? also when you ordered parts did you specify the 3sfe or the 5sfe engine, or does it matter? sorry for all the questions... jason
I ended up purchasing a new battery, and cleaning the crap off of the terminals... when I hooked my dvom in series with the battery post and + wire... I had a voltage drop of 6 volts!! super shotty connection... so the new battery and terminals solved that problem.
as for the 3sfe into the mr2... I'm glad I did it, it's still running like a champ.. no problems so far.... the swap is basically a "drop-in". you'll have to re-use your 2.2L intake manifold, fuel rail\injectors, egr system, distributor\wires, and oil pressure sending unit..... the engine mounts EXACTLY like the 5sfe...so no mods there.... I'll post some pictures of the swap if you're interested, or need some help.
yea, post some pics if you could. i just bought the car (91 NA) and the engine blew a rod. did you notice any power loss or gain? i hear you lose almost 20 HP with the 3sfe compared to the 5sfe... if that is the case i will just get a 5sfe. thanks for your help, jason...
if anything, I've noticed a decent increase in power... I mean, my 5sfe had almost 220K on it!!! and this 3sfe was documented at 28K miles... so it's still "torquey".. I put an obx header with no cats and an ansa muffler.... that might've helped a bit, but I have'nt been on the dyno at school yet.... I'll find that disk with the pics, and post them soon.
how did you throw a rod?!! was the engine that far gone?
dont know, just bought the car. guy said the engine was rebuilt 3 months ago. he was driving it and bang! smoke came out the exhaust and it was dead. now the engine wont turn over... guy said he was done with it. so i bought for $1000 and took it off his hands.
Hey guys, I am currently performing this swap, and I am still having issues getting my 5sfe out. The kid before me really drove this thing rough. I found out he must have gone mudding or on a wet beach in this thing! Anyways both balljoints are stuck (what is new) so I took both spindles and control arms completely off to gett he axles out (and the axles were pretty stuck in the tranny as well, took a good amount of wrenching to get em out.) Right now the only thing in my way is the exhaust, then I can drop the motor finally. Oh wait! I cannot figure out how to do this. I first tried the downpipe from the cat. 2 bolts and thats it. 2 bolts out, and the 3rd nut is rusted n stripped. I can deal with that, but then I looked at the lower end of the exhaust past the flex pipe, and i cannot fathom where to disconnect the exhaust. Do I need to drop the entire thing, muffler and all? There is a mount for the pipe on the rear suspension bar (whatever it is called, I'm sure you know what I am talking about) but it looks like the pipe goes straight through that.
I know what you're saying... the exhaust was easiest to disconnect immediately after the cat, and then where the muffler connects to the midpipe.... then pull the manifold up and out of the way... next remove the muffler (the driver side is a 17mm, and the pass. side is a 14mm I believe) ... next pull the mid-pipe out from the back of the car.
sounds easier than it is... that's why I purchased a completely new exhaust system prior to the swap..... I KNEW I'd break some exhaust bolts.
I'm still working on getting those pictures of the swap from my friend.... I'll post them soon
i cant finda 3sgte engine anywhere!! where di you get yours and how much did you pay!..i want to make the swap quickly but i dunno how much it will cost..and if its jsut a simple drop in...yay!
