Dirt In The Intake - Poor Boost = bad filter?

I recently put an intake on my car (arospeed blitz replica) it looks like. when i first put it in, it felt very nice the response was great the whirling was great. then 1 week later i noticed my cars power felt really dead. the turbos spooling sounded a little choppy, and my guage was reading 0.5 bar when it usualy reads 0.6. lol i dunno if thats a big drop in performance but i cud sure notice it. so today i took the intake plumbing out to check my turbo for play and everything was dandy, but when putting the the plumbing back in i noticed my metal elbow on the intake was completely caked in soot - like oil and dirt. so i'm assuming the intake i bought doesnt do a good job with cleaning the air. is this a common problem with aftermarket intakes? also when i buy a better filter and clean the plumbing will the dirt that got into the turbo clear out or is there a way to flush it out? thanks guys.

Is it one of those sponge filters? Those things dont do a damn thing in terms of filtering. You would be best off with a K&N style filter.

Poor filtering IS common with POOR filters.

Get yourself a good K&N cone filter.

What style intake you have matters not for keeping particulates out of the engine. The filter is what you need to look at.

Run, don't walk, to your local parts store and get a filter that doesn't suck. K&N has a pretty good product.

did you guys even read teh thread or just the title?

he said its got oil and (i assume exhasut gas) soot.

you need to filter your PCV. you will see a tube from the valve cover to infront of the turbo.

th eillegal was is to just use a mini breather, but this is not reccoemnded on 3sgtes as when they age their valver cover pressure rises extremly hight and the intake vacuum helps suck this pressure out.

get an oil catch can.

  • i have my PCV filter on already. the oil in my intake plumbing is minimal and as i have read up on and explained so by jeff is normal. i now have a oil cath can i will probably install when i have spare time. but my main issue relating to this thread is my crappy filter. i'll go get a K&N filter this week aswell and clean out the entire intake plumbing along with intercooler pipes.
