I have a friend with an mr2 which has the air fuel converter (afc) and the vpc. Im looking into buying a piggy back later on and Im interested in the Greddy e-management system. The only reason i want a piggy back is to be able to use a t3/t4 bearing turbo. What do you guys think about this piggy back? Anything else that might be better?
if you are going to put a t3/t4 on almost anything, under nearly any circumstance, you should not put a piggyback in charge of your presumably expensive setup... why drop 10K on your build and spend 500 + tuning costs when you could do it right and spend 1000-1500 + tuning?
e-Manage is the best 'piggyback' out there. i have one...still to be installed. it doesn't try trick the ecu, it alters the signal that goes to the sensors & etc. while the ecu
'sees' the proper voltages. the laptop interface is available and also has provisions for manual controls. it is good for fuel and spark control.
For a little bit more than the e-manage, you can get the hydra nemesis. A complete engine control unit. No piggy-back. If you're going for big power, the right way, don't waste your time with piggy-backs or black boxes.
Sure, they can be used well to an extent, but they will only take you so far.
and, by the time you're done buying all the add-ons to control everything, you'd have spent more than you would if you had just bought a complete engine management in the first place.
Just my $0.02

but for people who don't care to go full management, the e-Manage is great. i hate like hell to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with no availability of loading-up a fuel map or anything. my purpose-built/racecar is street-drive-able and it has full management...i've been stuck before. i LOVE TOYOTA RELIABILITY.

Well first of all I don't have an mr2. I have a 90 celica st with the 3sgte swap. Recently i took out the engine because a piston chipped on cylinder #2. The reason for that was because it leaned out. I bought a walbro fuelpump for an mr2 and im going .020 over and probably mate it with eagle rods. My immediate goal is to get the block bored out, purchase a metal head gasket and pistons and get my crankshaft strenghten. I want to have my block to be able to handle at least 18 pounds of boost. I know its not possible until i buy other parts like boost controller and tunning. I don't want to have a drag car, my goal is to have 350-400 horse power. I want to have a reliable car for daily use and be able to take it to the drag on thursdays. Other performance parts i have would be a puck clutch and ats knock sensor. lsd is also going to be droped in once the engine gets put in again.

I agree with you that a stand alone would be the best to have a t3/t4 setup. The only thing is that a hydra nemesis and aem stand alone management easily go for 1200 plus tunning. The greddy e-management i can get for 500 dollars plus tuning. In other words, im still a student at a universtiy who has to save up some cash and work more to buy these toys.
Would these parts be fine to be able to use a t3/t4 b-bearing turbo
1)550cc injectors
2)Aftermarket fuel rail
3)Greddy e management
4)boost controller
5)3 inch downpipe
6)Walbro fuel pump (255 lph)
PLEASE ENLIGTHEN THIS NOOB!
celfatic , i don't see upgraded intercooler on your list. . if you're uping the boost, you will need more cooling. a more free flowing exhaust will be neccessary too. not just a larger down pipe, but all the way to the tips. heat is the engines worst enemy. detonation is a big issue when raising boost.

yeah, your right. I forgot about the the front mount intercooler because the 3sgte comes on top of the engine. Oh about the exhaust, i have a 3 inch cat back so thats why i didn't put it on the list of parts i need. Anything else other than tunning? HOw would you keep detonation in check? By simply not being to rich or to lean right?

on top of having correct fuel/air ratio, you need to keep your intake charge as cool as possible. a large IC with good air flow is good. some guys use water injection on top of that.
anytime you compress a gas(air in this case) it becomes heated. you will be compressing more gas at a higher pressure level, so those intake temps must be kept to an acceptable level as to prevent deadly detonation. keep you ignition system in good working order too.
